Teacher Appreciation Day is part of the nationally-recognized National Teacher Week.
The week is celebrated during the first week in May, and National Teacher Day us celebrated on the Tuesday of that week. Teacher Appreciation Day 2014 falls on May 6. As early as 1944, teachers called for a national day to honor educators. In 1980 the National Education Association (NEA) lobbied congress to create such a day, and March 7, 1980 was observed as National Teacher Day that year. The organization continued to celebrate the day in March each year until deciding in 1985 to change the event to the beginning of May.
To acknowledge these everyday heroes, many companies are offering Teacher Appreciation Week freebies. Below are nine of our favorites, along with some retailers that offer teacher discounts year-round to help educators save money. Today some businesses around town are thanking teachers for their hard work in a special way. Thousands of teachers around Southern Arizona help students get ready for the future every single day, but today is the day to thank the teachers who have done so much for their students. McDonalds is one restaurant that is thanking educators with a free meal.
In 2013 McDonalds in Arizona served more than 32,000 meals to educators on Teacher Appreciation Day. Workers with McDonalds say it is the least they can do for teachers and all the hard work they do.
But the free stuff for teachers does not stop there. Chipotle Mexican Grill is hooking teachers up with free food today as well. Teachers just need to bring in a school ID card to any Chipotle around Tucson and they will offer a buy one get one free item of anything on the menu.

The promo, valid Tuesday from 4 p.m. to closing time, includes burritos, bowls, salads and tacos. The offer isn't valid for catered orders. Orders can't be placed online or via mobile of fax. There's a limit of one item per staff ID shown.

Teachers in Arizona are welcome to visit McDonald’s restaurants on Tuesday to receive a free extra value meal. The first 100 teachers to visit each participating McDonald’s will also receive a free Small McCafe Beverage Keytag, redeemable until Aug. 31. The deal is valid from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Whether you’re still employed or retired, Applebee’s is offering all current and former educators in Wisconsin a free meal at participating locations. Freebie meal items up for grabs include: three-cheese chicken penne, bacon cheeseburgers, chicken tenders platters, fiesta lime chicken, chicken fajita rollup and oriental salad. The offer is valid for dine-in customers only. Beverages and tips aren't included.
