TCS guns for Guinness record
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India 's largest IT company, is trying for a record in the Guinness Book of Records for achieving a feat of different kind. It has managed to gather 9.55-lakh rural students in Karnataka to physically participate in an IT quiz on a single day. This could make it to the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest IT quiz, if not as the largest in the general category, the company feels.

For the last seven years, the company has been holding the Rural IT Quiz as part of Bangalore IT.in. This year, TCS printed 10.8 lakh question papers for the preliminary round, which was held on September 15.

It was conducted like any other important exam, say SSLC: The question papers were sent to the offices of respective deputy commissioners in all the 27 districts of the state. Then they were distributed to DDPIs and block education officers, who in turn despatched them to schools. The question papers were opened at the same time across the state on Sept 15. And a record 9.55 lakh appeared in the first round.

The Rural IT Quiz entered the Limca Book of Records for being the first rural IT quiz way back in 2000. Then, it had witnessed participation of 28,000 students in the preliminary round.

Quizmaster Giri Balasubramaniam, chief executive of Greycaps who has been associated with the event for the last seven years, said, "Our belief is that there is no other quiz in the world with a physical participation of this size on a single day. While we are confident that it is the biggest IT quiz, we need to see if this is the biggest quiz too. We have just established contact with the people at Guinness."

Like all these year, the final was held at the Palace Grounds, venue of Bangalore IT.in 2006. Of the six teams qualified, B S Karthik and G Arjun Kumar from St Joseph 's PU College, Hassan, won the final. They walked away with a prize money of Rs 80,000. The second place went to Pavan Kumar Holla and Karthik Hebbar from Little Rock , Udupi, who were awarded Rs 50,000.
