SIOM’s 7th National Summit on Operations Excellence
Symbiosis Institute of Operations Management reaffirmed its persistent endeavor towards creating Leadership in Operations Excellence as it organized and hosted the 7th National Summit Tattv, graced by the presence of Industry stalwarts. Tattv is one of SIOM’s main protagonists in its goal of providing the meticulously chosen class of MBA students the opportunity to interact directly with Industry Leaders and become acquainted with the best practices and latest trends in various business sectors. Aligned with its vision of creating Leaders for operations Excellence, this edition of Tattv was themed on Business Sustenance, so apt in these times of economic turmoil and upheavals.
The opening address by the Director, Dr. Vandana Sonwaney threw open the day for the exciting two-way affair between the eager audience and the learned orators by rendering Tattv as the “Think-piece of changing ways and processes”. This was preceded by the felicitation of eminent guests and speakers along with lighting of the lamp by the Director with her rank and file. Speakers lined for the day to speak on the five domains viz. operations, marketing, finance, human resources and information technology were from Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., ThyssenKrupp, ESDS, and Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication. The Director continued her deliverance on insights and talked on asset redundancies, capacities building for survival, the gap between reality and intended business situations, and everything that’s in the offering for business sustenance. Winding up, Dr. Vandana deliberated on the changing dynamics of management education emphasizing on the role that research and outsourcing is going to play in this sector.
Moving ahead with the proceedings, Mr. H.D.Aher, V.P, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. talked on Best Business practices in Operations. With 30 years of experience across in Mahindra and Mahindra, Mr. Aher elaborated on the Mahindra concept-“Manufacturing is Glorious”. The VP covered on every aspect of Mahindra and Mahindra that has today created a legacy of excellence in operations through what they call as “QPCDSM” on the concepts of quality, profit, cost, delivery, safety and morale. This was followed by an enriching session on queries and answers that ranged from knowledge repository and sharing to Joint ventures, and from Supplier Relationship Management to Customer Relationship Management. This was followed by the energetic and candid deliverance of Dr. Pawan Kumar Singh M.D., Rothe Erde, ThyssenKrupp on Strategy and Operations Excellence in Rothe Erde, ThyssenKrupp. He talked on business sustenance through technology and innovation and Rothe Erde’s phased establishment pattern driven by strategic planning and intricate assessment of the industry environment. Finally during the QA session Dr. Pawan gave insights on renewal energy and sustainability, capacity enhancement and redundancy building for crisis mitigation and the bottom-up approach of strategy building.
The post lunch session was lined for three speakers. First in this series, Mr. Hussain Dahodwala, research Analyst, ESDS, enlightened the audience on the concept of Cloud Computing and its business implications. This was followed by a lively session on the topic Credit Management in Supply Chain delivered by Mr.Krishna C Jha, Manager, Credit Management and SCM, ThyssenKrupp covering on issues linked to credit policy, credit controls, and credit ratings. Finally the summit culminated with an enterprising deliverance by Prof. Chandan Chatterjee Director, Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication. He delivered his talk reigning on the theme – “Ruling the customer minds against all odds”. Prof. Chatterjee’s deliverance jolted every one present back to high caliber deliberation,dwelling on the paradigm shift of marketing from “delivering value to customers” to “offering things of value to customers”. Laced with many interesting anecdotes and some legendary marketing sagas, Dr. Chatterjee kept the whole bunch of operations enthusiasts glued to marketing wizardry. This final session then gave way to the certificate distribution ceremony felicitating the student coordinators, volunteers and creative team of the organizing team. The day ended on a high note with a vote of thanks offered by Ms. Vasudha Verma, the student convener for Tattv to all the dignitaries, guests and audience.
