Tata Steel-Riversdale JV to produce premium coal
Tata Steel its Benga project in Mozambique where it has a joint venture with Riversdale Mining Ltd to become a world class project in view of the hard coking coal mined from there and grades suitable for mine mouth power generation.
Tata Steel had entered into a JV with Rivesdale in November 2007. The project will produce premium hard coking coal, plus domestic and export thermal coals through benefication. Mining optimization will be undertaken to increase coking coal yields and optimize the coking properties of coal products.
The Benga project will produce thermal coals with the capability to generate grades suitable for export and mine mouth power generation.
Riversdale Mining Ltd is planning to set up mine mouth power generation for its captive use and will find markets in South African Power Pool (SAPP) which is currently experiencing acute power shortages that is expected to continue till medium term.
Among the advantages of coal at Benga project include high energy levels at 5500 kcal/kg GAD, low inherent moisture at 0.8 percent, high boiler efficiency, relatively benign ash chemistry and good grinding purity
