Adware, spyware, worms, viruses, trojans, spam… computer users the world over are now familiar with these gremlins that often make working on a PC or laptop a nightmare. At the company’s three security operation centres – one of which is in India – employees analyse and correlate emerging threats to help customers prepare for and withstand attacks. Its pedigree is supported by other illustrious names and includes industry leaders such as Veritas, Altiris and Brightmail (Source: archival data).

Achievements
Its aptitude to successfully integrate acquired technologies has kept Symantec at the front of the industry and facilitated best-of-breed solutions for millions of corporate and individual customers. The company has earned almost every major technology award and top-tier ranking from industry analysts. This explains why the Symantec brand remains so imminently

as Global Market Share Leader in Enterprise Backup; Backup and Recovery Software; Core Storage Management Software; and Email Active Archiving. Between 2006 and 2007, in the Gartner Magic Quadrants, the company was listed as a leader in PC Configuration Life Cycle Management; Managed Security Services Providers (NA); Storage Services; Security Information and Event Management; Email Active Archiving; Content Monitoring and Filtering for Data Loss Prevention and Email Security Boundary. History
Symantec Corporation was founded in 1982 and incorporated in Delaware. It was designed to provide a range of solutions to help individuals and enterprises feel assured that the integrity of their information technology infrastructure as well as the information itself was not being compromised. In other words Symantec was in the business of providing on-line security against virus attacks. Early in its life, Symantec earned its spurs as the publisher of Q&A – a dual-mode product that was both a word processor and a data base. It was also well-known for its development tools, particularly THINK Pascal, THINK C, Symantec C++ and Visual Cafe packages that were popular on the Macintosh and IBM PC compatible platforms. In the 1990s two things happened: Symantec exited the development tools business and switched focus, away from development of its own products, towards acquisition of companies. An early purchase gave Symantec ownership of Norton Utilities, created in the mid-1980s by software engineer, Peter Norton. In 2003, Symantec acquired PowerQuest, the company that developed PartitionMagic. Today,

The Symantec Global Intelligence Network is an extraordinary resource for the company’s customers, providing real-time view of emerging digital threats almost anywhere in the world. With more than 40,000 sensors in 180 countries and more than 6200 managed security devices, Symantec gathers malicious code data from 120 million systems and scans more than

In 2007, International Data Corporation (IDC) recognised Symantec in a wide range of award categories including Data Protection and Recovery; Cross–platform provider of Clustering and Availability; Email Archiving Applications; Security and Vulnerability Management; and Policy and Compliance, and Host and Vulnerability Software; plus an award for software developed for Messaging Security and Virus Protection. In the same year, Gartner rated the company

Promotion
One of the company’s key objectives is to reach out to consumers and educate them on how to defend their computer data from virus attacks. Online threats today are more sophisticated, damaging and potentially dangerous than ever before. Symantec plays an important role in educating people about online frauds, theft of personal information and other cyber crimes. Symantec participates in publicpolicy dialogue and law-enforcement efforts geared towards detecting and deterring cyber offence. The company also supports the development of the next generation of cyber security talent through its internship and scholarship programmes.

Symantec continues to sell this software but under the Norton PartitionMagic brand. This is true also of the NetWare Partition Manager – ServerMagic and PowerQuest's Drive Image software which replaced the original Norton Ghost. On 16th December 2004, Veritas and Symantec announced their plans to merge. With Veritas valued at US$ 13.50 billion (Rs. 54,000 crore) it was the largest software industry merger of its time. Symantec's shareholders voted to approve the merger on 24th June 2005 and the deal closed successfully on 2nd July – two days before America’s 229th Independence Day. After the merger, Symantec had a considerably expanded portfolio including storage related products such as the popular Veritas File System (VxFS), Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) and Veritas Volume Replicator (VxVR). On 16th August 2005, Symantec acquired Sygate a security software firm with about 200 staff, based in Fremont, California. By the end of November of the same year all Sygate personal firewall products were discontinued by Symantec and those in production were rechristened Norton Personal Firewall. In 2007, Symantec announced plans to acquire Altiris, a company established in 1998 and headquartered in Lincoln, Utah, in the US. The acquisition was completed three months later. Altiris specialised in service-oriented management software which allowed organisations to better manage IT assets. The company also had software for web services and security and systems management products.

storage software data. The former includes products that protect consumers and enterprises from threats to computers, computer networks and electronic information devices and platforms. The latter includes products that archive, protect and recover business-critical data. By themselves these are huge businesses and require special focus. To strengthen their operations and to exploit their full potential, Symantec, on 31st March 2006, restructured its business into six operating segments: Consumer Products, Enterprise Security, Data Protection, Storage and Server Management, Services and Others.

Brand Values
The company’s core belief is that people should be able to work and play freely in a connected world and that customers should have confidence in their connected experience – infrastructure, information and interactions. All employees are instilled with values designed to give substance to this belief. The company encourages the promotion of innovation through creativity and collaboration; it extols employees to achieve goals and exceed customer expectations; it advocates the inculcation of attributes of honesty and integrity; and it promotes fairness and accountability. As a critical component in keeping the world networked, Symantec is fully apprised of its crucial role. This explains why it usually has an antidote ready before a virus attack.

Recent Developments
Symantec’s rise to technological eminence and its progress in the pecking order of the world’s most influential and powerful companies is a matter of public record. From being ranked 672 in the Fortune listing in 2006, Symantec climbed to 515 in 2007 and propelled itself to 461 in 2008 – breaking into the 500 league for the first time. In consolidating its position and refocusing on its core competencies, Symantec announced in January 2008 that it was spinning off its Application Performance Management (APM) (Precise Software Solutions) business to Vector

Symantec is also an industry leader in comprehensive electronic messaging security, offering solutions for instant messaging, antispam, antivirus, legal compliance, content compliance, legal discovery and message archiving. The company's popular Norton brand of consumer security software solutions provides protection for Windows and Macintosh platforms as well as personal digital assistants – or PDAs – and smartphones. The Enterprise Security segment provides security solutions for all tiers of a network: at the server tier behind the gateway and at the client tier, including desktop PCs, laptops and handheld devices. The Symantec Security Response organisation (formerly Symantec Antivirus Research Center) is one of the foremost antivirus and computer security research groups in the industry. The company primarily operates in two growing, diversified markets within the software sector: the secure content management and the Capital. However, to ensure that the transition is a smooth one, Symantec will support the APM business post closing via a transition services agreement. In another development – and as evidence of its concern for the environment – Symantec has launched a massive drive to conserve natural resources. It has taken measures to conserve energy, recycle paper and to make judicious use of water. Its offices and establishments have installed lighting sensors and computer monitor controls that automatically shut down lights and equipment when not in use. The early results have been so satisfactory that the company has initiated concrete targets for several environmental programmes and has developed ways to measure their progress. In May 2006, Symantec joined Sustainable Silicon Valley's Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reduction Initiative. This collaborative effort between the public, private and non-profit
