Probably not overall, but we could certainly conserve what fossil fuel stocks we have for those uses that are crucial.
The need for fossil fuels for anything that uses electricity e.g. some production, travel, communications, entertainment, healthcare, heating, cooking and most machinery use should not be of fossil fuel.
For many occasions when we need a combustible fuel source such as outdoor heating / cooking etc. in these instances it should be able to use electrically charged fuel cells or other renewable fuel sources such as wood or wood product waste.
Therefore there is no reason to stop using oil completely.
