Sun Microsystems Ranks Sixth on InformationWeek 500

Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - News), global technology leader and creator of the Solaris[TM] Operating System, today announced that it ranked sixth on the 2006 InformationWeek 500 revealed last night at a gala awards ceremony, part of the exclusive InformationWeek 500 conference in Rancho Mirage, California.

In addition to being ranked in the top 10 category, Sun Microsystems was also awarded the winner in InformationWeek's Innovation Category for "Supply Chain." Recognized for its supply chain and business-technology strategies, investments and administrative practices such as controlling IT costs, Sun Microsystems joins an elite group of industry leading companies mastering innovation.

"Sun Microsystems is honored to be chosen as an InformationWeek Top 10 company, one of the most prestigious IT rankings of the year," said Eugene McCabe, executive vice president of Worldwide Operations at Sun Microsystems. "This award recognizes our ongoing commitment to technology innovation and places our technology, especially the improvements to our supply chain, among the best of the best in IT today."

Sun's One Touch Supply Chain program spans all aspects of the fulfillment supply chain, from order entry through to customer acceptance. By automating supply chain processes, Sun enables suppliers to ship products directly to customers, thereby reducing the need to plan and hold stock in a distribution center. This model increases the predictability of shipments, because vendors can build products based on actual customer orders, rather than on sales forecasts. Since implementation, Sun has seen excellent savings, particularly in the areas of distribution spend and inventory holding cost. Added benefits to customers include predictability, reliability and speed.

"We'd like to extend our sincere congratulations to all InformationWeek 500 honorees. These companies represent today's leading technology innovators, many of whom have joined us this week," said InformationWeek publishing director, Fritz Nelson. "This group has prompted fascinating discussion on some of the most forward looking business technology initiatives to date."

For the past 18 years, InformationWeek has identified and honored the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual listing. The list is unique among corporate rankings because it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
