• The land that is now Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French colonial expeditions explored, and later settled, the region's Atlantic coast. France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America to Britain in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. This began an accretion of provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy, culminating in the Canada Act 1982.
•
Canada is a federal state governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. The country is officially bilingual at the federal level. As of 2011, it has a population of approximately 33.4 million. • Canada's economy is one of the world's largest and is reliant upon its natural resources and trade, particularly with the United States, with which it also has a long and complex relationship. CITY OF TORONTO
• Old City Hall, a showplace of history and exquisite craftsmanship, celebrated its centennial birthday in September 1999. During a week of festivities which included public tours, musical performances and the unveiling of a new time capsule, residents and visitors alike gained a new appreciation for this important city landmark. Toronto's third City Hall took almost 20 years to plan and implement and began with an original budget of $600,000 and was completed for approximately $2.5 million. The stone, grey from the Credit River Valley in Ontario and brown from New Brunswick, took more than 1,360 train-car loads to deliver - the equivalent of a train nine miles long. Additionally, 8,354 barrels of cement were used.

•
Following the opening of Toronto's fourth and current City Hall, Old City Hall was threatened with demolition during the planning of the Eaton Centre. A group of concerned citizens and community activists, known as the "Friends of Old City Hall", convinced the city to preserve this important landmark, that complemented Osgoode Hall and the new City Hall. Old City Hall was declared a National Historic Sit e by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada in 1989.

Since its opening in 1987, the tower - known as the Tour Olympique or Tour Montréal - has welcomed more than 4 million visitors. Indeed, visiting the observatory is an awesome experience for guests. As the highest inclined tower in the world, Tour Olympique stands 175meters tall and at a 45-degree angle. (In comparison, the Leaning Tower of Pisa sits at only a 5% angle!) On a clear day, visitors can see the Laurentian Mountains, located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) away. Getting to the top of the tower is half the fun! Guests ride a one-of-a-kind funicular that ascends the exterior of the tower, so the view begins from the time you enter the vehicle until you once again arrive safely at the station. The funicular has 2 levels and can carry 76 passengers at a time. Given time to load and unload, that means more than 500 people can ride each hour. 6 August 2012 MBACOLLEGESCANADA.COM 39
