Managing stress
• • • 1. 2. • • You cannot eradicate stress; you can only control it. Need to master techniques to make you feel more in control of your stressors and symptoms Two philosophies: Action philosophies: change your life Relaxation philosophies: accept life for what it is Thus there are things you will have to learn how to change; and things you have to learn how to accept To make changes you have to learn: how to take control, be assertive, to achieve a sense of self-mastery To achieve acceptance you have to learn: how to relax, reduce tension, and to reach a state of inner calm Not a question of either / or; you have to do both

Managing stress
• • • • All problems in life, complex forces pulling you in different directions, can be divided into: Things you can change through action Things you can live with by relaxation You have what it takes to solve problems in your life – you need a framework for more clarity. Be aware of using the appropriate techniques for your problems Equip yourself with a set of techniques

Action techniques
• • • • Allow you to predict and deal with the world around you: Pros: Sense of control Effectiveness of time Applicable at work and home Allow to achieve complex or distant goals Cons: Leads to obsesiveness & dissatisfaction Impatient with what cannot be changed Futile quest for perfection Action techniques help pro-activeness

Relaxation techniques
• • • They teach that happiness and serenity can be reached through a state of inner calm: Accept life as it is Learn to accept slings and arrows of outrageous fortunes Pros: Acceptance of life as it is Reduction of anxiety New kinds of rewards A broader view of the world Cons: Avoidance of change Escapism, avoidance of decision Excuse for inertia

Hardiness
In these days of relentless emotional and psychological pressures: • Survivors use 3 personality types: - They are COMMITTED to what they do - They feel in CONTROL of their lives - They see change as a CHALLENGE rather than a threat • The above three C’s are the ingredients of Psychological Hardiness • Besides hardiness people fight stress through: Social support; Exercise; A strong constitution • A hardy personality is more important than a strong constitution

Hardiness
• Hardy people should be able to face change with confidence and self-determination, and the eagerness of seeing change as an opportunity. In contrast, a less hardy person could feel alienated, threatened, or helpless in the face of any major challenge in the status quo. Stressed but healthy executives were more committed, felt more in control, and had bigger appetites for challenge You can become hardier; the change will come through self-reflection, through learning.

Benefits of hardiness
• • • • Energizing Relieves tension and anxiety Strengthens the body stress-coping mechanism Clear mind, improve concentration and memory • Contribution to the feeling of exhilaration and physical wellbeing • Improve sleep • Alleviate depression
