St Xavier’s students to get Harvard view

Students of St Xavier’s College will be able to get an international perspective on education and challenges ahead of them next year at Harvard College. St Xavier’s has been selected to become a partner school at Harvard’s annual exchange event, the Harvard College in Asia Programme (HCAP).

“It’s a prestigious event and this collaboration will enable our students to get international exposure. Such experiences are bound to change their approach towards life,” said Dr Rajendra Shinde, director of Council of International Programmes at St Xavier’s.

Ten students from the college will attend a conference in 2009 at Harvard on “Opportunities and Challenges: Education in Globalised World”. Similarly, HCAP will send 16 students to attend a conference at St Xavier’s on the same theme. Students from various institutes in Mumbai and other places will also be invited.

HCAP is a non-profit student organisation at Harvard University that promotes academic, cultural, and social exchange between Harvard and academic institutions throughout Asia.

“We believe we can provide HCAP students a very good exposure to the Indian perspective of globalisation and its impact on education in India. They’ll be able to study the various challenges faced by youth today,” said Shinde.

Accordingly, St Xavier’s will organise academic and cultural events. This includes talks on history of Indian education system, religious education in India, higher education, government policies in India, and collaboration with foreign universities: opportunity or challenge.

As part of the social involvement programmes, Harvard students will be exposed to the rural and tribal culture during an interactive workshop on the “Warli” tribal painting. Students will get hands-on experience to paint one of the walls in the college premises,” said Shinde. They will also be doing a course in Hindi and yoga. An interaction with Akansha, an NGO which works with street children, and visit to a school for underprivileged children will also be included. In addition, HCAP students will meet the city’s ‘dabbawallas’ and learn about their techniques and logistics.

Students will deliberate on higher education abroad with focus on the advantages and disadvantages with US and Indian perspective. A discussion on whether India can emerge as global university will also be integral to the conference.

The other HCAP partner schools include University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, University of Tokyo, American University in Dubai and Ewha Womans University (Seoul).
