Status of the School

The Graduate School of Business Administration, otherwise known as the Wits Business School, (WBS) was established in 1968. Until 1992 the school operated as a separate faculty within Wits University. In 1992, the school of Public and Development Management (P&DM) was founded and both WBS and P&DM operated as independent schools within the Faculty of Management. In January 2001 both schools were integrated into the new Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management together with the School of Economic & Business Sciences, the School of Law and the School of Accountancy.
The prime mission of the School is to establish and maintain excellence in scholarship in business management through the promotion of research and teaching in the various disciplines that fall under business management. The School has an excellent reputation as a provider of academic and executive education.
The School is entirely postgraduate in nature, but offers an extensive range of certificate and executive programmes to experienced (but not necessarily graduate) executives.
The WBS academic faculty is drawn from a number of nationalities including Sweden, Great Britain, Germany, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Ireland, USA and Madagascar. Approximately half of our academic fulltime staff is non South African. Our visiting faculty is primarily based in the United States but we have representation from several other countries.
The WBS has a dedicated International Office which looks after all international exchanges and partnerships and is headed by Conrad Viedge.
Administratively the office is headed by our International Programmes Co ordinator Karen Trent who handles all administration and acts as the Student Exchange Coordinator. Gerda Whiteman handles outgoing International Business Study Tours and Charisse Drobis deals with incoming International Business Study Tours. The Director of the WBS International Office is a member of the Schools Management Committee and participates in all executive decisions. This office works closely with both the Academic Office and Executive Education. In addition the University has its own International Office. The University's International Office handles registration and health insurance. All other functions are handled by our internal International Office. Conrad Viedge also sits on the University's International Policy Committee which is Chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University and provides a forum for the WBS to make input on internationalization. On the WBS campus we have accommodation to house 20 international students at any one time and if the need requires we can always seek additional accommodation with the University's Residence Office which oversees more than 4000 residential places in 21 residences.

MBA
Master of Business Administration
Applicants should have obtained a bachelor's or higher degree from a recognized university or similar institution. In very exceptional cases an application from a person who holds a senior managerial position, who has many years of relevant business experience and is in possession of a qualification other than a degree may be considered.
Students who complete the PDM programme having shown above average academic performance and who have also had relevant business experience, are eligible to apply.
Recommended standards for admission
• POST-UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE
At least 3 years post-university experience is required, and applicants with more experience have a better chance of being selected.
• MOTIVATION
An applicant to the MBA degree is expected to be well motivated and to be conversant with the content of the MBA programme.
• MATHEMATICS
A level of competence equivalent to the requirements of the SA Matriculation certificate is advisable. A number of areas of the MBA degree such as Analytical Methods, Management of Operations and Technology and Corporate Finance require students to be able to think quantitatively and to have a reasonable level of mathematical ability.

MBA Programme Structure
Three programmes are available to prospective students:
1. A 14 month full-time programme, equivalent to two full academic years. Principle and core courses are completed from April to November; followed by Electives and Research from January to June of the next year.
During the first half of the course the class completes the Fundamental and Core courses. The second half consists of a Research Report plus five electives.
2. Three-year part-time programme, one commencing in January and one commencing in April. On this programme students are required to attend evening lectures on two evenings a week and on a few Saturday mornings. In addition, they must attend a four-day full-time study school at the beginning of the programme, and further study schools as may be necessary.
The Fundamental and Core courses are completed in the first two years, followed by the Research Report and five electives in the third year.
3. A combined full-time and part-time programme over 20 months: this is designed to give students the opportunity to attend the Wits Business School on a full-time basis for the first eight months and then switch to the part-time programme for a further year, completing five electives and a research report.
