Social Networking

Social media marketing is definitely the IN right now. People spend so many hours on social networking – accessing from home, work while commuting and even from classroom (wink, wink). So getting their attention on these sites is obviously the way to go. But having a presence on these sites is one thing, making your presence felt to these potential customer is an entirely different ball game.

It’s easy if you are a Coca Cola, Sennheiser, Apple, Microsoft or an EA games. But other companies that offer products and services that do not inspire fervent and zealous fan following have an arduous task ahead of them. Getting people to visit their page and engaging an active interest in the activities going on there is a challenge. How do they go about increasing traffic to their page?

Take a site like Facebook; the entire reason for its existence is the obsession to socialize around the clock. We are interested in what others are up to. It’s all about a peek into the lives of others. Then the key is to identify the stars, the people who are center of attraction and the people who are the trendsetters online. If you have them on your side, half of the battle is won. From there on, the thing spreads like wildfire. It is how videos, pages and causes turn into phenomenon. It’s like Rajnikanth jokes – suddenly you find them everywhere (FYI, Facebook didn’t turn Rajnikanth into a sudden obsession, it was the presence of Rajnikanth jokes online that turned Facebook into an obsession).

The other routes would be to target the only other pastimes that people have on facebook besides playing peeping Toms and Tabithas – Videos and gaming. A funny video being liked and shared and shared again is a common occurrence on social networking sites. Get enough people to share a video by you and you gain some presence. It could be an ad for your product or just a funny video with some smart product placement in it. Finally, you can turn to gaming. Small and smart flash games focusing on strategy, accuracy, timing and presence of mind are all the rage on facebook and there are millions of people playing them all day. If you can get a game that relates even tangentially to your product sponsored by your product/service, you can have their attention. Holding it is still an issue, but you will get their attention for the moment.
