Sizzling summer at IIM-C

KOLKATA: Records are set to tumble again at Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta when corporates scouting for talent.

And this time's summer placement gainers will include students who have completed a year. Faculty members said they owe this to 'brand IIM-C' and the brilliant performance of alumni who have been absorbed in India and abroad in the past.

Blue-chip companies have already announced a quantum jump in stipends for interns. Last year's domestic highest (Rs 100,000) and international highest ($6,000) are expected topped.

Boston Consulting Group McKinsey have announced stipends of Rs 110,000 and Rs 108,000 month respectively; the international stipend is likely to reach $7,000.

This year the number of 'slot zero' firms - those scouting for their foreign offices - will more than double, if feedback from the institute's placement cell is any indication.

Says spokesperson Vivin Hegde: "Not only are we getting more recruiters, most international firms are also recruiting our interns for Indian positions. Companies like Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse and Barclays Capital are expanding their presence in India, and offering profiles and terms similar to their international positions. This gives our students more choices, especially now that the Indian economy is growing rapidly."

This year, the institute will also see more consulting firms. Value Partners of Europe and AT Kearney have decided to start summer recruitment in India with IIM-C. McKinsey is even offering international positions.
