Sisters commit suicide in Thane

Estranged from their father, they lived in a rented house

Yojna Janardan Ankolkar, 25, and her 20-year-old sister Pranali Janardan Ankolkar, in Thane have committed suicide by hanging themselves from rented apartment’s ceiling. The incident came to light on Friday evening when neighbours at Gharkul Society, MHADA Colony, Sawarkar Nagar got a foul smell.

It is learnt that Yojna worked at a call centre while Pranali had appeared for HSSC examination. Daughters of Janardan Ankolkar, a clerk with Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), the daughters separated from their father in February this year. Police inspector, Vartak Nagar police station Suryakant Bangar said, “The girls lost their mother in 2001. Everything was fine till Janardan’s second marriage in 2003. Yojna and Pranali used to have conflict with their step mother and finally they decided to move out.”

The girls shifted to a rented house in Sawarkar Nagar in February this year. Despite being separated, Yojna and Pranali regularly visited their father. “They had gone to meet Janardan on Sunday. They had lunch with their father and came back to Sawarkar Nagar in the afternoon. No one had seen the girls after that,” Bangar said.

When alerted, the police broke open the door only to find Yojna and Pranali hanging from the ceiling of the room. “The bodies were so decomposed that it was difficult to establish identity of the deceased. When the room was searched, a lease and license agreement with the landlord was recovered,” Bangar said.

Landlord Sharad Eknath Bodse said only his wife, who had gone to Junnar, knew the girls through an estate agent. Their identity was established from documents found from the room. A case of accidental death has been registered.
