USA along with China have involved themselves in the exploration of the Shale Gas, Petroleum minister have ensured of signing of MoU with Obama in his coming visit. India is 75% dependent on the import of the oil and gas. She has quite a few exploration area like Cambay (Gujarat) , Assam-Arakan and Gondwana. She is still not sure of the possible area where the Shale gas can be found and the technology to exploit that has not been completely developed by USA so seeing the cost and benefit should we go for it?

The Indian oil companies due to outdated management policies and restrictions imposed by the backward looking Government are not keeping up with the latest technology not only in the oil sector but also in other sectors. While the chinese are advancing by leaps and bounds due to an enlightened policy, the Babus vision is limited to the orbit of caste, religion, states etc to secure a few votes extra to stay in power.

Three years back, conventional wisdom was that US will have a huge gas deficit and it has to import increasing quantity of LNG. However, in less than two years, the US supply has changed from one of deficit to surplus.courtesy - shale gas...So why not India go for it as well?

Shale Gas is a relatively new discovery and is being seen as the next big thing in the sources of fuel category. India is said to have large reserves of this energy and is capable of harvesting it to its full potential.

Moreover, as other alternative fuel sources go on diminishing, India will have to be reliant on Shale and Natural Gas to meet its energy needs.

Thus, we should start to develop and improve our existing technology to optimally utilise this new energy source!

The oil and gas industry has been instrumental in fuelling the rapid growth of the Indian economy. India has total reserves of 775 million metric tonnes (MMT) of crude oil and 1074 billion cubic metres (BCM) of natural gas as on April 1, 2009, according to the basic statistics released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Petroleum exports during 2008-09 were US$ 26.2 billion.
