Sensex managed to end with marginal gains on Wednesday after witnessing high volatility in intra-day trade. The market-breadth was negative on BSE, with close to 1.75 losers for every gainer. For 1,642 shares that declined, only 929 advanced. 57 shares remained unchanged. While auto and commodity stocks weighed heavy on the indices, select buying interest was seen in pharma, software and banking stocks. Sensex closed 11.35 points or 0.08 percent up to 13,949. It had opened firm at 13,951.09, and surged to an all-time high of 14,035.30. Its intra-day low was at 13,847.67. It witnessed high volatility, oscillating 187.63 points between the day's low and high.
Sensex' previous all-time high was 14,028.47, touched on Tuesday (5 December). The S&P CNX Nifty closed marginally up by 0.20 points to 4015.95.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 4545.28 crore as compared to Rs 4779 crore on Tuesday (5 December)
Among the 30-Sensex pack, 16 advanced while the rest declined. In NSE, there were 264 advances and 692 declines.
Among the sectoral indices, most were trading in the negative territory. Consumer durables stocks declined 2.47 percent, pharma stocks declined 0.72 percent, auto stocks fell 0.69 percent and FMCG stocks was down 0.60 percent while telecom stocks climbed 0.21 percent and banking stocks rose 0.13 percent.
The major market movers on Sensex were Ranbaxy, which gained 1.43 percent to Rs 390.50; ICICI Bank rose 1.23 percent to Rs 873, Bhel rose 1.13 percent to Rs 2,613; Bharti Airtel jumped up 1.13 percent to Rs 646 and Reliance Communications rose 1.06 percent to 462.90. Ranbaxy, Tata Power, Bhel, Bharti Airtel and Hindalco were the major gainers in the NSE.
The major BSE losers were Reliance Energy, which declined 2.34 percent to Rs 540.30, HDFC fell 2.09 percent to Rs 1,570.50, ACC was down 2.02 percent to Rs 1,141, Cipla fell 1.96 percent to Rs 247.55 and ITC fell 1.81 percent to Rs 186.80.
TCS rose 0.7 percent to Rs 1,197 on reports that it has won a five-year outsourcing contract from UK's United Biscuits.
Yes Bank jumped 5.4 percent to Rs 130 after the bank entered microfinance business in a technical tie-up with Accion International.
ICICI Bank rose 1.2 percent to Rs 873 after the bank-opened offices in Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, to capitalise on a rise in cross-border deals.
