Reports for Scenario of Optical Storage Media

Description
Optical storage is a term from engineering referring to the Storage of data on an optically readable medium. Data is recorded by making marks in a pattern that can be read back with the aid of light, usually a beam of laser light precisely focused on a spinning disc. An older example, that does not require the use of computers, is microform.

Reports for Scenario of Optical Storage Media
Abstract
Recently, there has been a surge in the usage of solid state media like USB flash drives and SD cards in India. Contributing it to the most is the students and business fraternity which is a frequent user of USB flash drives, CDs, DVDs etc. Seeing the trend there is a new product launched by Moser Baer is launching new devices according to the trend and demand in the industry of the solid state media, like Flash drives and SD Cards. The study was under taken in the various sectors in order to measure the market potential for such a products. A primary research was conducted across educational institutes in the Delhi-NCR region to gauge the market potential for different solid state media. A secondary research was not possible, as historic data was scarce and inaccurate in this regard, so as to reach out to any fruitful deductions. Since, Moser Baer is trying to foray into newer market as compared to its bread & butter business of CDs\DVDs, hence it was all the more important to study the market well and do a proper SWOT Analysis in order to achieve maximum market penetration, with the launch of its new product line. The survey was conducted across colleges students, business houses and working professionals. Most of them had a huge potential of buying the flash drives or SD cards. As per the study conducted, Moser Baer’s biggest clients were the corporate clients while in the retail section Kingston was the market leader among the other players. There study even further showed that Pen Drives were the largest storage device sold in the retail market for its various benefits like Multiple Usability, Data Transfer Speed, Cost etc. while CDs and DVDs holds the largest market share for the business section for promotion and self consumption of the enterprises. Hence to sum it up, the study suggests that the market for pre recorded branded solid state devices has got a lot of potential and if Moser Baer properly penetrates this market, there are huge profits for the taking as clients from various sections of the economy and will come back if provided with good service.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction To Optical Storage Devices Optical Storage is any storage method in which data is written and read with a laser for archival or back up purposes. Typically, data is written to optical media , such as CDs and DVDs. For several years, proponents have spoken of optical storage as a near – future replacement for both hard drives in personal computers and tape back in mass storage. Optical media is more durable than typical hard drives speeds and to offer lower storage capacities. According to OSTA (optical storage technology association), current optical speed are approaching those of hard drives. A number of optical storage formats, such as Blu- ray and UDO( ultra density optical), use a blue laser to dramatically increase capacities. Direct access disk written and read by light. CD, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and DVD-Video are read-only optical discs that are recorded at the time of manufacture and cannot be erased. CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, WORM and magneto-optic (in WORM mode) discs are write-once. They are recorded in the user's environment, but cannot be erased. CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and MO discs are rewritable.

1.2 Advantage of Optical Storage Devices Over Magnetic Disks Optical discs have some advantages over magnetic disks. They have higher capacities as removable cartridges, and they are not subject to head crashes or corruption from stray magnetic fields. They also have a 30-year life and are less vulnerable to extremes of hot and cold.

1.3 Types Of Optical Storage Medias Digital storage media can be broken into three separate categories—

• • •

Magnetic Flash Optical

Optical storage has been a popular form of storage media due to the following reasons Optical storage media is generally available on a standard size disc measuring 12 cm in diameter. Since 1982, optical media is still the standard for purchased music and movie physical media. Several types of optical media are 1.3.1 Compact Disc still in use today.

Fig 1. Compact Disc Released in 1982, the CD (compact disc) revolutionized the music industry by offering digital sound to home consumers in replacement of analog formats. The CD was eventually transitioned from a music source to a form of storage for data. In 1990, the CD-R was introduced and allowed for the creation of optical discs at home with a personal computer. The average CD allows for up to 700 MB of data storage. Digital bits are stored as pits on the reflective material in the disc. A red wavelength laser detects these pits and converts them to a digital signa

1.3.2 Digital Versatile/Video Disc

Fig 2. DVD Released in the late 1990s, DVDs offered a widely accepted digital movie format. Allowing 4.7 GB for a single-layer disc and up to 8.5 GB for a dual-layer disc, DVD was an excellent choice for personal backups of data on a DVD-R or movie media. DVD is not only used for data and video. DVD-Audio discs are uncompressed studio master recordings that offer much higher bit-rate than a standard CD. DVDs used a red wavelength laser, much like CDs.

1.3.3 High Definition DVD

Fig 3. DVD HD-DVD was released by Toshiba as a competing format to Sony's Blu-ray disc. HDDVD offered enough storage space for full-length, high-definition movies on a single disc. HD-DVD discs were capable of holding 15 GB per layer with a maximum of two layers. Toshiba had planned on eventually releasing three-layer discs; however, with shifts of movie production studios, support for HD-DVD dwindled until Toshiba

announced it would no longer continue the format. HD-DVD drives use a blue wavelength laser that is able to read smaller pits on the optical media.

1.3.4 Blu-Ray

Fig 4. Blu Ray Blu-ray is the newest high-definition optical format. Developed by Sony, Blu-ray discs offer 25 GB per layer with up to two layers per disc. Blu-ray discs have a protective coating that reduces the number of scratches and makes the disc durable. Like HD-DVD, Blu-ray offers a full-length, high-definition movie on one disc. Blu-ray recordable, or BD-R, drives are becoming more common in home computers. The BD-R drives allow for up to 50 GB of storage on one disc. Blu-ray drives use the same type of laser as HDDVD drives to allow for greater storage on the optical disc.

1.3.5 Pen drives ( USB- flash drives)

Fig 5. USB – Flash Drive

Sometimes referred to as a jump drive, the pen drive is a portable USB flash memory device that can be used to quickly transfer audio, video, and data files from the hard drive of one computer to another. With a construction that is small enough to fit into a pocket, the pen drive derives its name from the fact that many of these USB drive devices resemble a small pen or pencil in size and shapePen drives are classified as NAND style data storage devices. Equipped with a large amount of memory capacity, the pen drive is considered to be an improvement on both the older floppy drive disks and the more modern compact disks that are often used to copy data and reload the files on a different hard drive. Even a pen drive with a relatively low storage capacity tends to provide plenty of space for a number of files. The types of files that can be loaded onto a pen drive are all the common types that can be housed on any hard drive. This makes it possible for persons to copy photo sword processing documents, movie clips, music tracks, and just about any other type of file.

1.3.6 SD-CARDS (MEMORY CARD)

Fig 6. SD- Cards An SD Card (Secure Digital Card) is an ultra small flash memory card designed to provide high-capacity memory in a small size. SD cards are used in many small portable devices such as digital video camcorders, digital cameras, handheld computers, audio players and mobile phones. In use since 1999, SD Memory Cards are now available in capacities between 16Megabytes and 1 Gigabyte. An SD card typically measures 32 x 24 x 2.1 mm and weighs approximately 2grams.
