The COVID-19 pandemic pushed almost every IT company into remote work overnight. What started as a necessity quickly turned into a new normal. Even now, in 2025, remote work remains a part of many IT job offers, especially for roles in software development, data analytics, UI/UX, and DevOps.

But the question remains: Is remote work here to stay in IT companies, or is it just a passing trend?

How Remote Work Has Changed IT Operations

Companies like Infosys, TCS, and Wipro initially struggled with this transition. But over time, they invested in secure VPNs, cloud infrastructure, productivity tracking tools, and video conferencing platforms. As a result:

  • Employees started delivering work on time—even from home.
  • Companies saved costs on infrastructure and office space.
  • Teams became more global, with collaboration across time zones.

This led to a major realization: Work doesn't need a desk—it needs results.

What Employees Think About Remote Work

Many IT professionals now prefer hybrid or fully remote setups. Surveys show that over 70% of tech employees feel more productive when working remotely. Why? Because they save hours in traffic, get flexible hours, and maintain better work-life balance.

However, it’s not perfect. Some challenges include:

  • Communication gaps with team members
  • Difficulty in separating work from personal life
  • Missing out on office culture and networking

What Employers Are Planning Next

While startups and product-based companies are embracing remote work, service-based giants are cautious. TCS and Wipro have announced “25/25” or hybrid working models, where only a portion of the workforce will be on-site.

Here’s what companies are doing:

  • Offering flexible work hours or 3 days in-office policies
  • Creating virtual onboarding and training for freshers
  • Hosting digital team-building activities
  • Investing in remote project management tools like Jira, Asana, and Trello

The focus is shifting from “clocking in” to “getting things done.”

Skills That Matter More in Remote IT Jobs

Working remotely doesn’t mean doing less—it means working smarter. Here are a few things IT companies expect now:

  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to manage tasks independently
  • Proficiency in collaborative tools (Slack, Zoom, GitHub)
  • Self-discipline and accountability

Even freshers are expected to be tech-ready from day one. Remote internships and project-based hiring are on the rise.

Is Remote Work a Threat or an Opportunity?

For many young professionals, this is actually good news.

You can work for a Bangalore-based or US-based IT firm from your hometown. You save money, avoid relocation stress, and access better mental health. However, there’s also more competition—now you're not just competing with your classmates, but with global applicants.

Still, for those willing to upskill and stay proactive, remote work is a massive opportunity.
