Position Overview:


Perry Local School District is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and reliable Transcriptionist to join our dedicated team in the Special Education department. The Transcriptionist will be responsible for accurately transcribing audio recordings, video recordings, and other forms of spoken content into written format, while adhering to district policies and legal requirements for student confidentiality and data privacy.

The ideal candidate will possess exceptional typing skills, an understanding of educational terminology, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to work independently within deadlines. The Transcriptionist will play a crucial role in supporting the district’s efforts to provide educational services to students with disabilities and other special needs.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Transcription Duties:

    • Transcribe audio and video recordings of Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, parent conferences, classroom activities, and other relevant educational content.


    • Accurately capture verbal communication, including spoken language, non-verbal cues, and specialized educational terminology.


    • Ensure all transcripts are typed clearly, legibly, and in proper format, adhering to district standards and legal guidelines.

  • Data Management and Organization:

    • Maintain organized records of transcribed documents, ensuring easy retrieval and secure storage.


    • Update and manage electronic files in the district’s student information system (SIS) or other designated platforms.


    • Ensure all transcription work complies with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and other confidentiality laws and regulations.

  • Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with teachers, administrators, and special education staff to understand the context and purpose of the transcriptions.


    • Communicate effectively with district staff to clarify unclear audio recordings and provide feedback when necessary.

  • Document Review:

    • Proofread and edit transcripts for grammatical errors, formatting issues, and any discrepancies or inconsistencies.


    • Maintain accuracy and attention to detail when revising documents or when feedback is provided by school staff.

  • Support for Special Education:

    • Assist in the creation of IEP documents and related paperwork by transcribing meeting notes, evaluations, and other required forms.


    • Support district’s compliance with special education laws by ensuring timely and accurate transcription of student-related documents.

  • Professional Development:

    • Stay up-to-date with new transcription technologies, software, and best practices in transcription for educational purposes.


    • Participate in required training sessions, workshops, and other professional development opportunities as directed.

Qualifications:


  • Education & Experience:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or higher preferred.


    • At least 1 year of experience in transcription, administrative support, or related field. Experience in an educational or special education setting is highly desirable.


    • Proficiency with transcription software (e.g., Express Scribe, Otter.ai, or similar) and familiarity with audio and video editing tools is a plus.

  • Skills & Abilities:

    • Exceptional typing speed (minimum 60 words per minute) with a high level of accuracy.


    • Strong listening and comprehension skills, with the ability to transcribe from diverse sources and dialects.


    • Knowledge of special education terminology and the IEP process is preferred.


    • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.


    • High attention to detail, excellent proofreading, and editing skills.


    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Suite.


    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously.
