Religious Prostitution

Unfortunately.. in some parts of our country.. the disgusting act of Religous Prostitution is in vogue and pedophiles too are having the Fun... I read this story some time back, and was surprised to see the way things have been happening in the country :

Devadasi is a religious practice in parts of southern India, including Andhra Pradesh, whereby parents marry a daughter to a deity or a temple. The marriage usually occurs before the girl reaches puberty and requires the girl to become a prostitute for upper-caste community members. Such girls are known as jogini . They are forbidden to enter into a real marriage.

Joginis are recognised by their copper bangles, the band they wear round their necks with a leather pendant and a long necklace with several pendants which have the image of Goddess Yellamma.

The practice was legal in India until1988, yet it still continues as is evidenced by the testimony of a 35-year-old former jogini named Ashama. She ran away from her village and returned to lead the fight to abolish the illegal practice. The local police do not enforce the law and the villagers themselves make no effort to abolish the heinous practice.

Since the day of the initiation, I have not lived with dignity. I became available for all the men who inhabited Karni. They would ask me for sexual favours and I, as a jogini, was expected to please them. My trauma began even when I had not attained puberty.

The practice of religious prostitution is known as basivi in Karnataka and matangi in Maharastra. It is also known as venkatasani, nailis, muralis and theradiyan.

It has been the Atheist Centre of Vijayawada, India , that has been most instrumental in the movement to eradicate this pernicious religious custom.

This s*cks man !! Even after 60 yrs of independence ppl believe in such horse shit in the Jet age.... when will this country learn to come out of the ipity-wipity crap and not to act on such meaningless religious practices.

Even after more than a 100 yrs of banning it, sati is still practised in many parts of the country, leading to increased ignorance among our countrymen.

India has been a hub for " andh vishwas " .

The problem is illiterate people who has ceased to have a thinking of their own.

They believe in rumours and blindly follow orthodox ideas .

Unfortunately the education system has not changed like it should have. The illiteracy ratio has not changed a great deal in the past decades.

We need a government which actually works for the people and not for their pockets.

besides that people follow their ancient practices attached to religion without questioning their meaning. In this country, where religion is above all man kind, i think it is very difficult to make people's minds change. Only a miracle can act as panacea for it...

today after so many years of independence also there are such superflaus incidents go on in some part of india ... people still belives in supestition , orthodox ideas ..... and much more
this is because people today are still illeterate in many parts of india.

RELIGION WITHOUT THE ELEMENT OF MYSTERY WOULD NOT BE A RELIGION AT ALL.......& PPL FOLLOW THEIR OWN RELIGION WITHOUT QUESTIONING THE MYSTRY IN HOLDS..............................THE ROLE OF EDUCATION HERE SHUD B 2 DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE 2 SIDES OF THE COIN NAMED RELIGION ........................& NOT 2 CONCENTRATE ON DIFFERENCES IN THOUGHTS & IDEAS OF DIFFERENT RELIGIONS IN THE COUNTRY.:nono:

ALSO STRONG FOLLOWERS OF RELIGION CONSIST OF EQUAL NUMBER OF BOTH ILLETERATE & LITTERATE CROWD.

IMO there are 2 causes for such customs to exists. One is education and second is religion. Education has a cause also has 2 facets. One is that of lack of education. Illiteracy is still prevalent in many many parts of India. Then there are others, who are 'Literate' but our education system is so terrible that even these literate people are in a sense illiterate.

Religion per se may not be that bad. But what matters is how people are taught religion. This is where the problem starts. The ones who teach religion are the ones who cause this problem.

A Bill against black magic and superstition was to be introduced in the Maharashtra Assembly this session. Guess what?? Some politicians opposed it saying it will hurt the sentiments of the people!! :SugarwareZ-064:
