Reforming eonomi maro models is diffiult to onei!e and implement" #or
one, there are multitudes of onflits of interests sine it is diffiult to en!ision
some sort of end state $here suh hange $ill sta%ili&e" 'ah organi&ed group
tries to put aross its point of !ie$ $hile the deision makers in!ol!ed $ill also
need to onsider the point of !ie$s and interests of the silent stakeholders sine
any neglet of suh groups is a reipe to in!ite ontinual hange rather than a
progress to$ards sta%ili&ed end state" (n suh a senario, it is therefore
imperati!e that the multitude of interest groups gi!e ade)uate respet to the
!ie$s * interests of other groups inluding those $ho may not %e so !oal like
retail onsumers, sundry en!ironmentalists, loal ommunities and the larger
soiety" +e still do not politial groups %eing organi&ed to represent suh
stakeholders at the negotiating ta%le and reflet a holisti sum of interest %eing
pondered upon sine our polity ontinues to %e largely dri!en around aste,
reed and religion e!en as (ndia mo!es to fi, its eonomi $orking model
through !arious e,erises %y the go!ernment"
-his is e!en as $e $itness emergene of ne$ politial a!atars and leaders $ho
try to %ring $ith them ne$ set of goodies and promises to larger population and
ar!e out a spae for themsel!es in an already heated politial ooker" +hat $e
are $itnessing is industry trying to identify the set of reforms that $ill help them
atapult to the ne,t le!el $hile en!ironmentalist rying foul at these efforts $hih
they feel $ill undermine the interest of soiety in the long run" A ne$ set of
initiati!es are rolled out to enlist support of suh en!ironmentalists like leaning
ri!ers or tree plantation as it seems $ith prior suh sheme yielding &ilh $ith
enormous $aste of money" Different sheme are also rolled out to satisfy
ommunities on $arpath like houses for eonomially $eaker groups to higher
ompensation for land to employment guarantee * skill de!elopment" -he
politial parties are yet to mature up to monitor and deipher the shemes as $ell
as implementation of suh shemes and send out learly $orded assessments to
their onstituents a%out net !alue %eing deli!ered to them %asis interpretation %y
the politial party"
+e still ontinue $ith slogan shouting leaders and $orkers in the politial party
$ho ha!e little interest in impro!ing the a$areness le!el of politial $orkers and
masses e!en in this age of super.duper hyper ommuniations through !arious
means like soial and mass media" -his is %eause the leaders of the politial
parties do not $ant to %e open to srutiny %y underlings in the party and so a
state of ignorane is %liss for the leadership" -he parties also do not $ant to
ommit anything a%out to $hat they $ould do differently, should they %e !oted to
po$er" (ndia, unlike say the /0 still does not ha!e politial onstituenies
organi&ed %asis eonomi priorities of people sine most leaders 1inluding those
in go!ernane2 ontinue to %e indulgent in hyper%ole as a means to rally masses
and their 3ommitments4 in pu%li speehes an rarely %e deli!ered to pu%li in
realisti senarios"
-he throttling of 5udiiary as $ell as in!estigati!e mahinery of polie in (ndia
$here an ordinary person annot e,pet timely resolution of grie!anes in
aordane $ith la$s has gi!en a little e,essi!e lee$ay to the media" -he
media ontinues to pik issues as per hoie to highlight points as desired %y the
interested groups and 3%uild6manipulate4 pu%li opinion around issues" -he long
5udiial proess ensures that pu%li opinion is already ethed and politial
5udgments %y people get e,erised e!en %efore trial is ompleted" +e may
$itness ourts granting reliefs and su%se)uent hyperati!ity of interest groups"
-hough politial leaders e,ist at %oth ends ho$e!er this has largely resulted in
e,essi!e po$er to politiians, 5ournos and la$yers"
+hile this politial tumult is on and $e ontinue to $itness a high degree of
fragility of politial areers $here more than 708 of the eleted reps are first
times in any eletions i"e" a%out half of e,isting leaders $itness sunset of their
areers9 lets see if any politial party or leader is learning lessons to %uild upon
ne$ eletoral platforms $here issues are analy&ed in more o%5eti!e manner and
generate greater partiipation from pu%li in suh proess" -his $ould re)uire
leaders to in!ol!e a lot more people espeially e,perts from !arious fields to
ensure that issues are $ell understood and point of !ie$ $ell artiulated to
pu%li" (t $ould also re)uire the politial parties to liaison muh more $ith
%usinesses and other stakeholders than they urrently do to ensure more
aepta%ility of the !ie$s they asri%e to or propagate" -he :eta %usiness in
(ndia is on ourse to %eome a %it ostlier for the :etas $here they no$ need to
grasp a host of issues $hih re)uire some degree of e,pertise9 rather than old
$ays of handling things $here the :eta had e!erything for opinion making po$er
as $ell as the %ooty in!ol!ed" But off ourse it an %e done in some :;< format
as has %een demonstrated $ith some suess" =resently though most politial
parties and leaders ha!e maintained am%i!alene to$ards hange other than a
fe$ $ho promised to $ork to$ards hange though ne!er learly highlighting $hat
that hange $ill atually %e and ho$ $ill this get deli!ered" >o$e!er suh parties
ha!e reaped eletoral di!idend and $hat atually gets deli!ered is a point to %e
ga&ed" ?ets4 see if more politial parties em%rae the hange in the hanged
tehnologial, eonomi and soio.ultural senario"
