Rear window Q.How does Alfred Hitchcock create suspense in the rear window? -The rear window is a 1954 American thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The movie owns a distinct feature. Director Hitchcock uses this one room and one rear window through which he begins the movie, builds up the suspense and eventually ends it. The movie begins with Jeff, sitting on his wheel chair after having fractured his leg while photographing a racetrack accident. He sits in his rear window helpless observing all the happenings alongside and the people in there. Right from the ballet dancer, a lonely woman, a song writer, a few married couples, a middle aged sculptor and Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr) a jewelry salesman who lives along with his bedridden wife Stewart does not slip a look of any occurrences. As every day, his routine follows another day. Jeff sits vigilant by his window, and finds Lars have an argument with his wife soon after which he discovers suspicious incidents take place. The bedroom in which resided Thorwald’s wife is no longer in there. He notices Thorwald’s droping in and out from his apartment in the night. He also watches him clean a saw and giving away a large packed box to some men which builds up to the suspicion. He is driven by these mysterious on goings and begins to be more curious. Jeff describes and discusses his observations with his girlfriend who ignores Jeff’s inquisitiveness as just mere incidences. She later realizes the mystery enclosed in these incidences and further helps Jeff in his investigation. Jeff along with his girlfriend (Lisa) and his Nurse (Stella) one by one begin to unlock the locks to this enclosed mystery box. The trio doubts him on having killed his wife and closely check on him. Jeff explains the unsolved mystery to his detective friend Tom, and asks him to enquire about the large packed box which went missing ever since Thorwald had given it to the men. Later a dog belonging to one of the neighbors is found dead with his neck broken. The dog owners accuse the people of being shamefully negligent of the incident that took place. All the residents were seen peeping out through their window after the incident. While all of them showed their concern by standing at the window, Thorwald sat back with his cigar displaying no worry. Thus being the first key to mystery box. Thereafter, Lisa and Stella slip notes at his doorstep. Jeff telephones him and assures him that he knows of him having murdered his wife. All of which is possibly done so that Thorwald confesses his guilt.
