Reliance Communications (RCom) has reportedly begun rollout of the 'world's largest and fastest rural infrastructure' project, within a day of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Universal Service Obligation (USO) program of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Under this project, RCom will commission nearly 8,982 Base Terminal Stations (BTSs) to provide telecom services in around 2,34,000 Indian villages that currently lack telecom connectivity.

Inaugurating the project, Anil Ambani, Chairman of RCom, said that the very commencement of this project is a step forward in bridging the digital divide in the country. Ambani said the project would provide telecom coverage to millions of people who live in the remotest parts of the country.

He added that RCom has emerged the most successful telecom operator in bagging maximum number of sites under the USO initiative of DoT.

That the company has constituted a special task force for the national level rural rollout, and that the national rural marketing team would be responsible for completing tasks as per deadlines, as also ideating and conceptualizing attractive schemes to promote telecom growth amongst the rural populace.

And, RCom announced ambitious plans to launch these telecom services within two months, post provisioning of passive infrastructure in the concerned locations.

Reportedly last year, RCom established its telecom network in more than 40,000 villages under the USO fund, and added close to 7.5 lakh new subscribers in these areas.

There are future plans to enhance network coverage to reach 25,000 towns and 4.5 lakh villages by March next year.
