It's hard to answer. You're presented with a couple of possibilities of A and B. A that gives $10 to B, or A that keeps it. B that splits the reward or B that doesn't. A that pays to exact revenge, or A that doesn't.
The problem I have with the example is that it's such a small amount of money and it was given to them in the first place. I think anyone that would plot revenge on such a trivial matter is kind of petty to begin with. Besides that I live by the rule that a loan to another individual (i.e. not business related) is a gift. Don't expect the money back when you give it and it will make life easier for you.
All that is not to say I'm above revenge. If I feel I am seriously wronged and I have given the offending party a chance to make it right, look out. In the words of a Recon Marine I met once, "I have Irish Alzheimer's. I forget everything but a grudge."
One of my favorite stories of revenge is from a guy I know. When he was in high school he was dirt poor. As in never owned a single piece of store bought clothing until he got a job and bought them himself poor. He had acquired an old beater car and was fixing it up to drive. One luxury he bought for the car was a nice tachometer which was stolen by a guy in one of his classes. The guy who stole it was from a very wealthy family and had no reason to steal it. Of course dude couldn't prove it so he just let it stew for a while.
Anyway, a little while later, Mr. Thief Guy called dude and said he'd ran out of gas and asked for a ride. The guy I know asked where he was and where his car was. He stopped by the car on the way, set it on fire and then circled back the other direction to pick the guy up. Imagine the surprise of both guys when they came up on the burning remains of the car.
Wow, how's that for not answering the question?
