Project Report

Corporate Social Responsibility Program is not like a spare wheel which you can be taken out at the time of crisis, rather it should used as a steering wheel to give direction to the management on its Corporate Responsibilities.
Businesses are constructive in the development of community as they are creating employment, wealth, products and services. Successful corporations need a healthy society. Education, health care, and equal opportunity are essential to a productive workforce. The responsibility of companies is no longer limited to its shareholders alone, although this is still central in the legal systems). Safe products and working conditions not only attract customers but also lower the internal costs of accidents. Efficient use of land, water, energy, and other natural resources makes business more productive. All these are now getting on the agenda of Corporate Social Responsibility. Creating a strong corporate culture which emphasizes Social Responsibility values and competencies is much needed. At the same time some newer issues in corporate social responsibility have emerged.

To recall the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”
However, today the society is questioning their conduct in wake of the scandals and scams. To defend themselves these organizations are now awakening to the need for building image of a Socially Responsible Company. Over the years the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has gained lot of momentum and has become a strategic issue. Many corporate have now started repositioning their image as Socially Responsible Corporate Citizens, through their newsletters/ websites/ policies/reports. Still majority of the companies are just taking up some form of philanthropic activities to impress upon their stakeholders. Many are jumping the bandwagon of Socially Responsible Citizens only as a fire-fighting measure. We have best of talent, best of brains and opportunities to create and implement effective Corporate Social Responsibility Programs. However the key questions are – Will it be sustainable? Will it deliver the desired results? Will it make the right impact? The answer to all these and many more questions is – YES, if it comes straight from heart, if it is not just showcasing your efforts.

CSR will be effective if it is ingrained in the mind everyone in the organisation, rather being the responsibility of a team set to implement the Charter. To elaborate on the point take the case of Real Estate companies in India. Major Corporate in the Reality Sector advertise about their generosity and concern for the underprivileged through their Corporate Social Responsibility Programs. Their website show public testimonial and picture of their Hospitals, Schools and NGO’s. their effort is to show to the media, the public, the locals, the government, the world, their concern for the common man. Yet they are fighting legal battles in various courts for charges ranging from deficient services to customers to involvement in land grab scams and corruption scandals. Ansals are involved in Uphaar Fire Case, Unitech is facing enquiry in 2G scam, DLF is in dock for refund of deposits, and a number of builders are facing trouble in the NOIDA land acquisition cases. Yet most of them have impressive CSR Programs. The question is for whose benefits? After taking over the land and evicting people how can you justify yourself as Socially Responsible Corporate Citizen. Unless there is a serious Intent CSR will be of little value. ILLUSTRATION – 01 Sat, 27 Aug 2011 New Delhi: At least 10 anti-trust complaints against India’s largest real estate company DLF are pending with the Competition Commission of India (CCI), according to three senior officials with the competition regulator. The latest complaint was filed a couple of days before CCI’s R630-crore fine on the company last week, which followed a petition from those who had purchased residences at DLF’s The Belair complex in Gurgaon. The latest complaint too, interestingly, pertains to The Belair.
