1/Introduction

With present-day trend towards international economic integration, each company need to keep up with new trend of information technology to be survival in perfectly competitive market, moreover, ensuring their solid position and expanding the market share. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate that information system plays an important role of company?s operating through its enormous benefits. In order to give objective general evaluation, I will represent the advantages of information system in both four main industries: financial services, healthcare, retail and communication, respectively. In each industry, I will choose a representative company and analysis in four parts: introduction of company, type of business and target customers, benefits from information system and the last part- future information system plan.

2/Financial Services-Vietcombank (VCB)

2.1 Introduction of Vietcombank

Founded on April 1963 as a Stateowned commercial the bank, oldest

Vietcombank,

commercial bank for external affair in Vietnam, is considered as the first bank in Vietnam having centralized management structure. Under the license signed by State Bank of Vietnam, VCB turned into

3

joint-stock bank in 2008. After 48 years in building and developing, VCB had important contributions to stabilization and development of nation economy. As the accomplishment of the role of the bank for foreign trade of Vietnam, VCB is interbank forex payment center for over 100 domestic banks and foreign banks? branches operating in Vietnam, which result in the largest market share in interbank forex market as well as largest portion in export-import payment and guarantee.[1] Being the leading commercial bank in trade finance, international payment, forex dealings, advanced banking, VCB achieved many awards such as: The best domestic trade finance bank, the best bank of Vietnam in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 by “The Banker”, the Asian banker talent and leadership development award, etc. [2]

2.2 Type of Business & Target Customers of VCB

From a bank majoring in foreign trade, VCB is becoming a multi-purpose bank that operating in diversified banking field. VCB provides customers the best range of financial service in the field of international trade, besides, this bank also offers traditional activities such as venture capital, capital mobilization, credit, project financing…as well as modern banking services: card service, electronic banking, foreign exchange, etc. VCB provides basic products and services, which consist of personal banking, operate banking and e-banking. In term of personal banking services, VCB helps individual clients manage their money and save for the future with stable income from their temporarily unused money. Through operate banking services, VCB satisfies customers by easily money saving in bank through their financial activities every single day and offering loans for each goal, target or foreign exchange. E-banking is a strategic plan of VCB that composed of six services: Internet Banking, SMS Banking, Phone Banking, VCB-Money, VCB-eTour and VCB-eTopup. [3]

4

2.3 VCB’s Benefits from Information System

Financial institution and bank, in particular, are one of the largest investor in information system (IS) and there are indications that this trend is likely to continue. VCB is also in this trend of expanding and investing in information system which result in competitive advantage of better customer services and high productivity. One of the necessary systems that VCB designed for financial transactions and customer support is accounting information system with different components: general ledger systems, loan accounting applications, mortgage banking applications, customer account applications, internet banking applications. Each component that comprises the accounting information system creates different value?s profit for bank. For instance, general ledger is the record accessed to perform account transaction, so it is at the core of account processing and information systems in banking. By using loan accounting applications, bank personnel can process the forms and paperwork needed to make a decision on a customer's credit standing. The managerial side of a loan accounting application is managers can access data to examine the bank portfolio, generate compliance checks for auditors and track loan or loss reserve accounts. [4] The first important benefit of using information system is enhancement productivity. As we have known, bank uses computer technology to perform almost of its intended task (computer-based information system), so processing of orders settled by computer quickly and automatically. Besides it, through accounting information system, since bank does not need too much time to acquire and share information among department, so the result come quick and making decision easily. Based on transaction processing system which helps bank deal with customer?s transaction every single day and manage online transaction, bank provides better care service for customers. Now, many customer transaction can be dealt at single time with quick and efficient process solving because of help from IS instead of paperwork in the past, this convenience leads to the increase in productivity. This system is cost-effective, it reduce the administrative cost (no need to have many clerks and cashiers) and paperwork related to the transactions, thus raise the profit margin of the bank by surprisingly large number.

5

Thank for accounting information system, bank can manage customer?s information, record daily transaction in an easy and accurate way. With help of information system, individual customer and business can make basic transaction and keep track of financial transaction with bank 24 hour per day through Auto-bank network with 1,700 ATM and 22,000 card acceptance payment across country. [5] At each single point of time, bank must cater to the needs of thousand customers and this is a continuous process which requires high accurateness and quick update, thus information system is very important part of the bank. Customer account is created and maintained on the system and referenced by account number. Due to the link between account number and customer information, with password and identification number, each customer account can be checked by only one client so can keep customer account secret. Moreover, VCB joint in Smartlink, a switching services interbank system, which allow VCB?s customers to withdraw money from 26 others member of Smartlink by using VCB card. [6] The most obvious advantage of IS that cannot be denied is convenience and better care for customer by a powerful “value added” tool called online banking. Especially, Internet banking, the newest evolution in the bank information system, allow customer to make transaction, foreign exchange, billing payment, etc. Manage can analyze the reports link with internet banking, estimate market and respond instantly to the market change.

2.4 VCB’s Future Information System Plan

VCB is facing many serious matters. For example, the basic structure of the bank is increasingly in conflict with the changing product, delivery, and service needs of the customers. Moreover, nowadays there are many banks which compete with each other more and more serious, therefore they must consider whether they should apply new information system or not. The information security is not really secure, so it is easy to hacker for stealing the important information. They must also create performance measurement systems to assure the mix products and services they offer are beneficial to both the customer and the bank.

3/Healthcare-Bach Mai Hospital
3.1 Introduction of Bach Mai Hospital

Established in 1945, Bach Mai is one of the largest hospitals of Vietnam. Today, Bach Mai hospital develops and becomes a specialized medical center with magnificent infrastructure with modern medical equipment and high qualified doctors, along with innovation and management improvement. Bach Mai has made great achievements in caring and protecting people?s health. Bach Mai is the first hospital in the country awarded as a special hospital. Bach Mai hospital has 1,400 sick-beds and all the center directors [7] have postgraduate qualifications.

3.2 Type of business & Target customers of Bach Mai Hospital

Minister of Health care Nguyen Quoc Trieu has worked with Bach Mai hospital on the hospital plans to develop a specialized health-care center in October 2009. In particular, the hospital will focus on developing seven areas: cardiovascular, recover – emergency

7

– anti-toxic, nerves, nuclear medicine and oncology, diagnostic imaging, biochemistry, microbiology. [8]

3.3 Bach Mai’s Benefits from Information System

In recent years, the application of information system in health care becomes more popular all over the world. Based on DICOM and HL7 standards towards agreement on exchange of information and data between health facilities, the information systems are built up in order to help the whole hospital operating system such as management, diagnosis, treatment and health care. Bach Mai„s hospital information system (HIS) is composed of three software components: electronic patient records (EPR), radiology information system (RIS) and picture archiving and communication system (PACS). Hospital information system (HIS) is comprehensive, integrated information system designed to manage medical, administrative and legal aspects of a hospital and its service processing. HIS is the best tool that optimizes to achieve maximum efficiency in management operating system, research-training, statistics, forecasting, prevention. EPR is software system which is used to replace the paper-based records in the management of patient information, diagnosis, tests and treatments. EPR brings many advantages in the process of searching, looking up, summing up the data for treatment and research support. [9] As an area of medical informatics the aim of an HIS is to achieve the best possible support of patient care, outcome and administration by presenting data where needed and acquiring data when generated with networked electronic data processing (Wikipedia). [10] HIS provides an efficient and accurate administration of finance, diet of patient, engineering, and distribution of medical aid. Therefore, it can be considered as a decision support system for the hospital authorities by providing a broad view of hospital growth for comprehensive monitoring hospital?s activities. Through internet system, board of directors can quickly access the server to check all the data of hospital operations: personnel, financial, clinical (do not need too much time waiting for report

8

from subordinate), so they can be flexible in monitoring and responding to the problem. Moreover, HIS helps improve monitoring of drug usage and study of effectiveness. This benefit results in reduction of adverse drug interactions while promoting more appropriate pharmaceutical utilization. In addition, with the help of HIS, not only does the hospital increases the information integrity (reduce transcription errors) but also cut cost of paper and film (reduce duplication of information entries). The internal information can be transmitted over the network and X-ray film and medicals image stored as digital, easy to duplicate and share. There is no doubt that HIS strongly contribute to improve the quality of health care service. By using EPR, all the information of an individual, including demographics, medical history, medication and allergies ...can be easily accessed and collected, thus reduce time consuming and time. Because the patient administrative information is stored on the patients? card and on server, so it can be reused and does not need repeating. With the large number of patients, the time will reduce significantly, so patient waiting time also reduces. [11]

2.4 Bach Mai’s Future Information System Plan

The information system in hospital is very important and useful, especially Bach Mai hospital, a cradle of the surgical industry of Vietnam and biggest surgical center of the country. In the future, it can be more developing if it have some important changes. Security system is essential therefore in using IS it must pay more attention to the security of information, prevent mistakes and loss of patient information.

3/Retail-Big C
3.1 Introduction of Big

C

Big C supermarket operates following business model of commercial center, a form of modern retail business, which Casino group (parent group of the Big C) deployment. Casino is one of the leading retail groups in the world, with over 200,000 employees working in over 11,000 branches in Vietnam, Thailand, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Columbia, France, Madagascar and Mauritius. Big C is one of the leading retailers in Vietnam with five supermarkets in the North, three supermarkets in the Central and six supermarkets in the South. [12]

3.2 Type of Business and Target Customers of Big C

Big C supermarket introduce to customers across the country modern comfortable shopping spaces with diverse type of goods, quality control and reasonable prices, along
10

with effective customer service. Each Big C supermarket has about 40,000 items in response to customers? need. Besides, all the Big C supermarkets across the country offer the shopping experience with many useful services to the customer. [13]
In addition, Big C also work with local providers to promote the development of their own private labels include “Wow”, “Big C” and “Bakery by Big C”. Besides, Big C supermarket has export department located in Dong Nai Province, which is responsible for procurement and export of domestic products to foreign markets, especially the retailers of Casino group. [14]

3.3 Big C’s Benefit from Information System

In today highly competitive environment, retailers are forced to adopt modern information system in order to gain competitive advantages. There are various information systems we can find in Big C such as merchandising system, sales and marketing system, point of sale system, financial accounting system, attendance and payroll system and administrative system. Big C retail information system can be divided in four main types: transaction processing system (TPS), management information system (MIS), decision support system (DSS), executive support system (ESS) and each type has its specific function and benefits. Transaction processing system is a basic system which provides needed input for other system by facilitating customer transaction and other routine business process. The first advantage of information system we need to take into account is cost and productivity advantages. Through electronic point of sale system, TPS can collect data continuously (at the real time when transaction occurs), so they can quickly provide input data for big C database. For example, when you checking out of Big C, each time the cashier swipes an item across the bar code reader, one transaction is recorded and data is generated. Because of benefits of automating process, the problem of inaccuracy in processing and collecting data is eliminated as well as reducing the time customer waiting for checking out, thus increase quality of customer?s service. The decrease in information duplication results in the operating cost reduction in comparison with previous paper-work time. In addition, thank for computer-based system, increase in

11

transaction speed and time efficiency also leads to the increase in productivity which means that Big C can serve more customer in a singular time. Furthermore, Big C applies the electronic data interchange (EDI) which helps big C and its suppliers exchange information of inventory levels, delivery times and unit sales etc of particular items. An effective communication enhances capabilities of decision-making, better control inventory. Electronic point of sales helps Big C collecting the data of customer and analyses purchasing pattern of customer, segmentation and customization of offers. The combination between electronic point of sale and electronic data interchange will help Big C not only define customers? demand and quickly respond for what they want, but also reduce stock outs and inventory levels, hence improving service to customer and reducing cost for retailer. [15] The second advantage of retail information system is marketing benefits. With help from information system, the data is easily accessed, so management can quickly analyses and defines the feedback of customers on new marketing decision: customers? response to promotions, new product and changes in price. Based on this analysis of environment feedback, Big C creates suitable marketing plan and forecast of sale. According to effectiveness of data store and improved communication with both customer, suppliers, big C is quickly respond to the changes of market conditions as well as the demand of customers. [16]

3.4 Big C’s Future Information System Plans

Today, consumers require personalize services. Therefore, in order to bring the best benefits for customers as well as capture the value in return, Big C should improve and expand the information system. Adding value to the retail transactions through ITassisted transactions (ATMs) may be preferred by some customers, self-scanning and instore kiosks for product information search is also a good strategy. Furthermore, Big C can develop technology-enable shopping (Internet shopping) for serving more customers. [17]

The second area is exploration, consultation, design, installation and maintenance of the telecommunications and IT works. Manufacturing, production, import-export and supply of telecommunications and IT materials and equipment are operating activities. [19] third importance

4.3 VNPT’s Benefits from Information System.

Administrative information system (AIS) is one main information system that VNPT has been used during the past two years. This information system helps VNPT manage documents and materials safely and conveniently. In addition, AIS provides a wide range of tools to support users capture, process and transfer information quickly. For the purpose of creating standardized information processing flow, AIS provides a solid foundation in storage and exploitation of information. In term of employees, AIS gives tools that help them keep track with business information as well as track their own assignment, including assignment for the day, the work was completed, work not completed or the work has expired. Through this function, each employee can manage their work effectively and control their own assignment. Besides, supervision also easily in collect information about work complement of each employees by access this system only, so they can supervise subordinate effectively and correct problem in time. Furthermore, using the administrative information system, people can access to the system and monitor the work delivered/received, thus reducing the time needed for working process between managers and each department as well as reduce cost of meeting while information exchange still well complete. With report tools, users can easily generate many different types of reports quickly and accurately. Administrative information system offers plenty of benefits to VNPT: reduce cost of paper-work and
14

information duplication, store documents in highly secure and safe system and enhance productivity and accuracy in working process. [20]

4.4 VNPT’s Future Information System Plan

In the competitive economic environment, VNPT need to invest more in information technology in order to develop and improve information system to gain the competitive advantage. In the term of telecommuting, information system is basic elements that create company differentiate and decide quality of customer service. In fact, there are some limitations that VNPT must overcome to maintain the top position such as the quality of telecommunication service, improve the efficiency of exploitation in 3G network-based service. Not only should VNPT enhance the quality of customer service, but also labor productivity and business efficiency by expand and complete information system. [21]

5/ Conclusion

It cannot be denied that information system is an important element that contributes to create competitive advantage for all industries. Thanks to information system, not only do all most all of companies get high additional profit by enhancing productivity and cost cutting, but also gain market share through better customer services.
