INTR0DUCTION
Michael Dell, in 1984 founded Dell in order to directly serve their customers with computers that meet their needs. The company was called PC’s Limited and he was still a student at University of Texas at the time. The following year, Dell came out with their very first computer called the Turbo, which had an eight-megahertz processor. The major goal was to produce personal computer systems that were IBM compatible and were produced or entirely stock parts. What set the company apart was not just its consumer-oriented focus but also its allowance for people to customize their computers during the ordering process. Because each computer was individually assembled, this was possible. The company grossed 73 million dollars in the first year. The company went public in 1988 offering shares for $8.50 apiece. The first Dell laptop made its debut in 1991 and by 1993, it became one of the top five computer companies in the world. By 1995, those$8.50 shares were worth $100. The progress of the business was
9
rapid and in1997, Dell had shipped its ten millionth systems. In 1996, Dell began selling their products through their website and three years later they took over Compaq. Jumping forward a bit, in 2003, Dell introduced their first printers for the public, including those intended for the average consumer and businesses. Dell printers are known for being versatile and easy to use; however a recent development has brought skepticism to the company when Lexmark began working with them whom modified their cartridges so that they don’t work with Dell printers. However, Dell has a long track record with customer satisfaction, at the very least in regards to their computer products.

NATURE OF PRODUCTS Laptop
What is a Laptop? A laptop is a personal computer designed for mobile use and small and light enough to sit on a person's lap while in use. A laptop integrates most of the typical components of a desktop computer, including a display, a keyboard, a pointing device (a touchpad, also known as a
14
track pad, and/or a pointing stick), speakers, and often including a battery, into a single small and light unit. The rechargeable battery (if present) is charged from an AC adapter and typically stores enough energy to run the laptop for two to three hours in its initial state, depending on the configuration and power management of the computer. Laptops are usually notebook-shaped with thicknesses between 0.7–1.5 inches (18–38 mm) and dimensions ranging from 10x8 inches (27x22cm, 13" display) to 15x11 inches (39x28cm, 17" display) and up. Modern laptops weigh 3 to 12 pounds (1.4 to 5.4 kg); older laptops were usually heavier. Most laptops are designed in the flip form factor to protect the screen and the keyboard when closed. Modern tablet laptops have a complex joint between the keyboard housing and the display, permitting the display panel to swivel and then lie flat on the keyboard housing. Laptops were originally considered to be "a small niche market" and were thought suitable mostly for "specialized field applications" such as "the military, the Internal Revenue Service, accountants and sales representatives". But today, there are already more laptops than desktops in businesses, and laptops are becoming obligatory for student use and more popular for general use. In 2008 more laptops than desktops were sold in the US and it has been predicted [who?] that the same milestone will be reached in the worldwide market as soon as late 2009
Desktop
15
A desktop computer is a personal computer that is designed to fit conveniently on top of a typical office desk. A desktop computer typically comes in several units that are connected together during installation: (1) The processor, which can be in a micro tower or minitower designed to fit under the desk or in a unit that goes on top of the desk, (2) The display monitor, (3) And input devices - usually a keyboard and a mouse. Today, almost all desktop computers include a built-in modem, a CD-ROM drive, a multi-gigabyte magnetic storage drive, and sometimes a diskette drive. At home, most desktop computer users also purchase a printer. In businesses and increasingly at home, desktop computers can be interconnected and can share resources such as printers by being connected to a local area network (LAN).

Product life cycle
Introduction
While a student at the University of Texas at Austin in 1984. Michael Dell founded the company as PCs Limited with capital of $1000. Operating from Michael Dell's off-campus dormitory room at Dobie Center, the startup aimed to sell IBM PC-compatible computers built from stock components.
19
Michael Dell started trading in the belief that by selling personal computer systems directly to customers, PCs Limited could better understand customers' needs and provide the most effective computing solutions to meet those needs. Michael Dell dropped out of school in order to focus full-time on his fledgling business, after getting about $300,000 in expansion-capital from his family.
Growth
Dell Inc. is a multinational information technology corporation that develops, sells and supports computers and related products and services, as a merchant. Based in Round Rock, Texas, United States, Dell employed more than 76,500 people worldwide as of 2009. Dell grew during the 1980s and 1990s to become (for a time) the largest seller of PCs. At the end of 2009, it held the third spot in computer sales within the industry behind Hewlett-Packard and Acer Inc. As of 2009, the company sold personal computers, servers, data storage devices, network switches, software, and computer peripherals. Dell also sells HDTVs, cameras, printers, MP3 players and other electronics built by other manufacturers.
20
In 2006, Fortune magazine ranked Dell as the 25th-largest company in the Fortune 500 list, 8th on its annual "Top 20" list of the most-admired companies in the United States. In 2007 Dell ranked 34th and 8th respectively on the equivalent lists for the year. A 2006 publication identified Dell as one of 38 high-performance companies in the S&P 500 that had consistently out-performed the market over the previous 15 years.

Local sales
Indian market BANGALORE: Dell reported a 17% increase in its sales in its Indian operations in its fiscal third quarter. But this good performance in India, as also in China, was an exception for the world's thirdlargest maker of PCs. The company's net income fell 54% to
22
$337 million, and its revenue fell 15% to $12.9 billion in the quarter. Dell's over-dependence on the commercial segment has meant that it has lost market share worldwide to companies like HP and Acer. The consumer market revived faster which has helped these latter companies. Rise in the costs of components, such as memory and liquid-crystal displays, affected profit margins. In India, Dell says it is now the No. 2 player, up from the No. 4 position at the beginning of last year.
23
Foreign sales
SAN FRANCISCO — After appearing to rebound from financial woes the past few years, Dell has stumbled again. No. 2 PC maker Dell (DELL) reported a 17% dip in secondquarter earnings, the victim of slackening corporate sales in Western Europe and Asia and restructuring charges. The second-quarter figures, announced after the close of markets, sent Dell plunging 10%, to $22.68, in after-hours trading. Before that, its shares had sunk nearly 2%, to $25.21.
24
Net income for the quarter ended Aug. 1 tumbled to $616 million, or 31 cents a share, from $746 million, or 33 cents a share, a year ago. Wall Street analysts on average had expected 36 cents, according to Thomson Reuters. The results reflect continued conservatism in informationtechnology spending abroad, Dell CFO Brian Gladden said in a conference call. Dell rang up $16.4 billion in sales in the quarter, up 11% from a year ago. "Growth was good, but margins were much lower than we expected," said Shaw Wu, an analyst at American Technology Research. "That's probably the result of selling so many low-end PCs." The quarterly setback came on the heels of an encouraging first quarter in which Dell registered surprisingly good results. Dell has aggressively targeted rival Hewlett-Packard with new consumer-friendly products, including colorful laptops. Gladden indicated that as Dell's presence in retail stores grows, it will take aim at back-to-school shoppers. On Wednesday, Dell unfurled four low-cost PCs for smallbusiness users in China, India and more than a dozen other countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America. It has also expanded its sales channel beyond the Internet and catalogs, and now offers PCs at retailers including Best Buy. That has elevated Dell's share of the worldwide PC market to 15.2% in the second quarter of 2008, compared with 17.7% for HP, says researcher Gartner

FUTURE PLAN

Dell affirms plans to integrate white space radios into future wares By Darren Murph posted Nov 6th 2008 8:55AM Barely 24 hours after the FCC voted yes to unlicensed white space use, we've already got one powerhouse lined up in support. According to PC World, Neeraj Srivastava, director of technology policy at Dell, has stated that the company "intends to integrate white space radios into future Dell products." As for what "products" actually means? We could see the modules in anything from laptops to netbooks to "any other devices that provide wireless network access." Sadly, he wouldn't say when the technology would be added, but we'll go out on a limb and suggest sometime after the impending digital TV transition.
