Hi guys,
normally any prohibition, imposed by a government, is aimed at curbing crime and corruption for the betterment of the people. But since ages it had fuelled illegal trades and unlawful practices. A law can only draw boundaries that are not to be crossed, but can never successfully restrict people from crossing those. Illegal methods flourish, so easily, to deprive the prohibition its expected fortunate result.
This is not the case always. What happens when the prohibition is imposed not by law but by the people themselves? Such a working model exists in an Indian village — Ralegan siddhi, a village that was once attributed to poverty, ill-health and alcohol driven violence is now serving as a model village for over two decades. When people understood the adversities of the alcoholism in their village, learnt from their own sufferings, many volunteered to shut down liquor dens. Then they imposed the prohibition of alcohol and are protecting it to till date.
Prohibition, a huge physical force of obstruction, can never be imposed in a single step. The masses are to be educated before placing a full-fledged prohibition in place. The support from the people is the prime force contributing in any successful prohibition. Hence, a prohibition will never serve its purpose – when imposed only by law, but will never fail to serve when imposed by the hearts of the people.
