ABOUT
The project is a detailed comparative study of usage of commercial vehicle, “best” and the Indian railways. It contains a wide study on PEST-Environment (Political, economy, social and technology environment). A SWOT analysis is also made on commercial vehicles. History of both BEST and the Indian railways is explained in the project with the help of various books and interview from employees of the Indian railway and “BEST”, suitable examples are also given

Objective
• To check the service quality & safety level • To analyze whether Mumbai BEST Buses are really an asset to the city or just an alternative? • To check the consumer perceptions about services offered by BEST & RAILWAYS etc.

THE BEGINNING
RAILWAY
? First in India in 1853 from Bombay to Thana. ? 1853 First railway train journeyed distance of 22 miles between Bombay and Thana ? Originally, operated by private companies Englishmen. 1925-1950 GOI took over the all the private railway companies.

(Brihan Mumbai Electricity Supply& Transport Services)
? Mumbai saw its first bus on 15 July 1926 the people of Mumbai received the bus with enthusiasm. First Ltd Bus Services in Mumbai and probably the first in the country as well started running in 1940. between colaba and mahim. When the corporation took over the company in 1947 there were 242 buses in the operation on 23 Route and these buses carried 2.30 lac passenger in a day . At present there are 3380 buses carrying 45 lack passenger daily on 335 route in Mumbai.

OBSERVATION
Railway Observation
• Two days, 25thof oct and 27th of oct 2013. We tried to cover various conditions at different timings. We had questionnaires regarding ticketing system and related facilities and the level of satisfaction of the passengers. First day I covered the reservation ticket booking counters from 9:00am to 2:00pm and on the second day from 3:30pm to 6:30 pm I surveyed the general ticket booking counters. I covered 39 persons in all. During those critical hours of our survey I also observed some interesting facts and those are listed below 1-Age Group 2-Gender 3-Frequency of travel 4-Awareness of E-ticket/I-ticket

Suggestions given by the respondents

• There should be proper sitting arrangements for the people who have to get ticket as they have to wait for a long time • Proper rules are not followed by railway peoples; they just follow rules to make their money, so a proper arrangement should be made for checking such type of crimes • The number of fans and lights are sufficient but they do not function well; so their proper checking and up keeping should be done • There should be proper maintenance of the queue

BEST OBSERVATION
• Two days, 22th of oct and 23th of oct 2013. We tried to cover various conditions at different timings. • To get good results a wide range of area was covered • Airoli • Powai • Sakinaka • People were selected from all class and age groups commuting in Center, Outskirts, Suburbs and other locations.

Research Review
• The transportation wing of Brihan mumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST Undertaking) operates a large number of bus lines in the Mumbai metropolitan area. • The BEST operates inter-city services to three areas beyond the municipal limits of Mumbai city, i.e., into the limits of the bordering corporations of Navi Mumbai, Thane & Mira - Bhayander. • As of 2011, the BEST runs a total of 4,680 buses, ferrying 4.8 million passengers over 365 routes, and has a workforce strength of 38,000, which includes 22,000 bus drivers and conductors (this comes to an average of 11.2 employees per bus) • in August 2006, BEST introduced pay phone system and CCTVs on its buses. This was done in response to terror attacks on the city?s buses and trains.

Research Findings
?It is the most affordable mode of transport for daily commuting with road network sufficiently well distributed. ? Lack of Security ? Unavailability of an adequate number of seats for senior citizen and handicapped Person. ?There is a need for systematic improvements to make it an asset to the city. Limitations ?High Chances of error. ? It is highly Objective in nature. ? Intentional deception, poor memory, or misunderstanding of the question can all contribute to inaccuracies in the data. ? CONCLUSION
The project is a detailed comparative study of usage of commercial vehicle, “BEST” and the Indian railways. History of both BEST and the Indian railways is explained in the project with the help of various books and interview from employees of the Indian railway and “BEST”, suitable examples are also given. Hence in conclusion we can state that with the rapid growth in the world economy, transports play an important role. Commercial vehicles have allowed the world to operate effectively and efficiently
