About the play
Eulogy is powerful play in which married couple who disagree over the tenor of the eulogy for the husband’s dead brother. The dialogs here are good and amazing. The play just moves on with the arguments between the couple about the eulogy the husband is going to say at his brother’s funeral. The characters here are the two couple, the husband named Ben Gracie who is around sixty years old. He is a lawyer and his wife Katherine Ann Gracie who is attractive in her late fifties. The scene here is, the couple are getting ready to attend the funeral of Sigsby Lancelot Gracie. Sigsby was Ben’s elder brother. He had two children Dot and Marlene who have asked Ben to say few words about Sigsby on the day of the funeral. He was Ben’s brother, law partner and life long friend. When he was alive he gave a lot of trouble and tried to destroy Ben’s professional life. Just before going to the funeral Ben asks his wife Katherine to listen to the speech, which he is going to say about Sigsby. Ben is very nervous to speak in front of people so he wanted to practice about the speech. In his speech he praises about Sigsby. Ben says many good things about Sigsby though he had troubled him a lot. Ben says that from childhood he has been with Sigsby very much and learned a lot of things from him. He was a fine and distinguished person of the family. He didn’t like the army but was a good officer. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery in the battle when he landed at Guadalcanal and Okinawa with the 244th Light Infantry Brigade. Ben told many more things about Sigsby’s life. At last when the speech is over he asks Katherine about the speech. Katherine surprisingly says that though Sigsby gave him a lot of trouble Ben praised a lot for him. She says that he should have have told all the bad things which he did to him and other people around him when Sigsby was alive. Ben explains her telling that whatever it is Sigsby was his brother and even after his death why should he speak bad about him. After listening to Ben’s explanation Katherine asks
Ben to listen to her speech, which she is going to speak about Sigsby at the funeral. Katherine in her speech says many bad things and also thinks that Sigsby was not a good person. She also says that Sigsby was thief, which she couldn’t prove it. Sigsby also used to humiliate people and also make them fools. She says one story about Sigsby, when she was waiting for Ben in his office she heard Sigsby talking to someone on the phone it was when Ben was running for judge. Sigsby assured the person on the phone that not to worry about Ben he would see to him (Ben). This shows that how bad Sigsby’s mouth was. After the speech, Katherine explains Ben that she cared about him and also about what he says but she didn’t wanted Sigsby alive even when he’s dead. She also said that he shouldn’t lie to himself by saying well about Sigsby. After listening to Katherine, Ben decides that he is not going to say any thing bad about Sigsby. After that they both go and attend the funeral of Sigsby.
My Views
The play is actually about the clash between the couple about the praises the husband is going to say at the funeral of his brother. The play written is very good and touchy. The author here is trying to say that even though Sigsby troubled a lot, Ben his brother respected him since his childhood. Ben has a positive attitude towards though Sigsby was a bad person. He thinks that if the person is bad don’t say bad about him even if he is alive or dead. Katherine, Ben’s wife is more like a fighting woman. She doesn’t want her husband to tell good about Sigsby at the funeral. She hates Sigsby a lot because of his behavior and talks. She doesn’t wants to forget what Sigsby did to destroy her husband’s professional life. She tells bad things in her eulogy for Sigsby at the funeral. And at last they both go and attend the funeral. Thus, the author here is trying to say that how much ever bad the person is respect him and be positive towards the person.
