out of the box thinking

Hey guys,

Lets share examples of out of the box thinking....

Lemme start this thread in a typical management style

What is Out of the box thinking?
Out-of-the-box thinking is something radically different - a ground breaking new initiative that provides an elegant solution, a creative approach to a problem or a new previously unused, unexplored direction. It need not be something remarkably complex - it just needs to be simple and elegant. The Nobel prize often celebrates out-of-the-box thinking - but what is it that wins one? It isnt something that is so far beyond anything that the rest of the scientists have thought, it is something that makes them go "Oh shit! why didn't I think of THAT?"

Example: (and please post more and more examples)
a Japanese assembly line was producing some empty soapcases. The most brilliant engineers designed an X-ray system with some indexing mehanism or something like that- to identify the defective boxes. They were explaining the idea to the top management who were wowed by it, till a shop floor worker suggested they put high power fans facing the line - so that the empty boxes would fly away!
