online MBA programs
Online mba programs are relatively new. It's estimated that 5,000 people were studying on an internet MBA program in 2000 and InterEd have predicted this will rise to 50,000 in 2002. The exact format and structure of these courses varies with some being "pure" online programs with no class contact time at all (eg University of Baltimore or Colorado State University) while others do include class contact time (such as Pace University or Portland State).
The most well known, and probably the top program in reputation is that from the Fuqua School of Business (Duke University). Its full time MBA already has a good reputation and this has helped its online program. It's also helped Fuqua to charge high fees - nearly $100,000 in 2001.
Many of the online mba programs are accredited by AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) but we're still waiting for some good research on the relative rankings of the programs. The best advice in the meantime seems to be similar to that for any distance learning courses - go with a program attached to a well known school.
