The Sensex closed at 16,242 down 538 points after seeing day's low of 16,242 and touched an intra-day high of 16,708. The Nifty shut at 4,835 down 167 points after trading in the range of 4,963 and 4,832. Among the broader indices - the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were down by 3.98% and 5.06% respectively. Realty, Metal and banking stocks led the losses today. The markets reported highest ever turnover today of Rs 1,83,019 cr. ahead of the F&O expiry.
