should industries such as agriculture, health care, banking, energy production, the Internet, etc. that are key to the survival of a nation be nationalized or left to management and manipulation of the private sector to serve primarily the pecuniary interests of a few investors?
I'm in favor of nationalization of such industries. One reason is the importance of these industries to the national well-being of a nation's citizens and national security. Leaving them to the "tender mercies" of the private sector which has little or no interest in the general commonwealth is courting inevitable disaster, as we've seen with the current economic crisis, speculation in food, and the rise in oil prices. Secondly, critical industries in private hands cannot be held accountable by the people whose lives they can so easily devastate. If these industries are state-owned, the people through their vote can influence how they are managed and the policies the pursue.
