Kalyan-kid, Manish Jaiswal excels in the art of writing on grain, Sangeeta Sharma speaks to this budding talent
It seems nano is in vogue. Nano-technology is making waves as also the one-lakh car-Nano, and now, nano-alphabets. Manish Jaiswal, a 14-year-old, Standard IX student is now trying to carve a niche by accommodating maximum number of words on a grain of rice.
"I had an intense desire to stand out from the mundane and what could have been better than developing this less-trodden path. I accepted this as a challenge," says this St Mary's School student, Kalyan, East.
It was a roadside guy who inspired him to write letters on a grain of rice. For Manish, it has become an enduring passion and a dream to be pursued. Born into an ordinary family where the father runs a tailoring shop, he set his heart on breaking the Guinness Book of Records, which is 47 letters away, the current record being of 108 words. He started by writing three to four letters like: Ram, Manu (his nickname), Krishna, ABCD etc. But now he has come a long way. He is able to write 61 letters within 15-20 minutes, on a single grain of rice.

I am the eldest in the family and am not very bright in studies but still I did not want to live an ordinary life," says the Netivali resident. He uses a fine brush and poster colour for this purpose. According to him, the quality of rice varies from the tini-mini to medium-size to the long basmati-rice grain. "I also won the first prize in the inter-school competition-Manthan-2007-08, which was very rewarding. These are small accomplishments that give you that push," adds a visibly-motivated Manish Jaiswal.
Manish wants to become an interior designer or a fashion designer, both are his favourite vocations. With that inner drive to forge ahead, exemplary patience and unrelenting labour, he stands as a shining example for all those youngsters who want to make big in life in their own field of interest. "My drawing teacher-Sandeep Patil constantly keeps encouraging me. It was he who asked me to participate in Manthan where I received a lot of admiration and praise from visitors," informs the youngster.
His parents are very hopeful that their hard-working son would sure feature in the Guinness Book of Records, an achievement that could bring this historical city of Kalyan to international notice. Dombivli Kalyan Plus wishes him the very best in his life.
