Nag Panchami is a sacred Indian festival dedicated to the snake-God. The festival gets its name from the fact that it is celebrated on the fifth day (panchami) of the moonlit fortnight of the Hindu month of Shravan (July /August). The main reason of celebrating this day must be that snakes are a great threat to mankind during these months. They usually come out of their holes as rainwater seeps in and while looking for shelter they might harm humans. However, this is why they are worshiped on this day and fed with milk.
Snakes are reptiles, not mammals to drink milk. Milk cannot be digested by reptiles and they eventually die! The Reason why snakes drink milk on Nag Panchami is because they are dehydrated and stressed for 30-45 days before Nag Panchami by the Snake Charmers.
How did this custom of feeding milk to a snake start???
In India, deaths due to snake bites were very common, so people who worked in farms kept some milk and grain near the ant hills and other places where snakes lived. Ants get attracted towards this milk and grain and to eat those ants frogs, small insects and rats are also invited, which are the snake's favourite meal. When snakes inside the ant hills came out, it found its food outside, so those snakes did not enter into the farm lands and houses of humans. Our ancestors were more scientifically sound than we are today! In this way our ancestors controlled snake bites. But due to some false leaders this practice took a very different aspect and is now proving fatal for our wildlife. False religious leaders have disregarded their ancestor's scientific practice and have added a selfish and murderous way to lure "spiritually blind" followers towards this cruel practice.
The commonly displayed snakes by snake charmers on Nag Panchami are common Indian cobra and Indian rat snake. These snakes are caught from the wild in perfectly healthy condition 30-45 days before Nag Panchami. They are then put through a lot of cruelty. They are defanged unsurgically using cutting pliers and at times their mouth is stitched so that they cannot bite in retaliation. Later, they are closed in the round wooden basket for more than a month without any feed or water which makes them weak, dehydrated and they are left with cramped muscles which kills their speedy movement!! ( Because of cramped muscles a cobra takes 20 min to 25 min to move one feet distance!) This is scientifically proven and is a shameful reminder to all "educated citizens" of India.
These Saperas kill these snakes after Nag Panchami and by piercing the head of a living snake with a nail against a stone and peeling off its skin while the poor snake writhers in pain and finally dies!! This peeled off skin is dried and Saperas get money after selling it.

Now-a-days a new trend is coming up where Saperas are using their women for snake shows
Very strange sight, but I found two fangs present on the left jaw of this cobra. Venom gland was destroyed and it seems like it was kept without food atleast from one month!! This is just one result of the false belief of people.
Some Saperas do not keep the snake with them in public. The snake basket is kept empty and on insisting by a devotee he shows the snake which is kept at some other place.
Is this called "RELIGIOUS WORSHIP OF THE SNAKE-GOD"??????
