Mumbai offshore container terminal approved


The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today gave its approval for Development of Offshore container terminal at an estimated coast of Rs.1228 crore.

The capacity addition due to implementation of this Project will be 9.6 million tones per annum.

The project approved for Build, Operate and Transfer basis will be implemented by Mumbai Port and the BOT operator namely, a Consortium of M/s. Gammon India Limited, M/s. Gammon Infrastructure Limited and M/s. Dragados SPL, Spain.

Of the total estimated cost of Rs.1,228 crore, BOT operator will invest Rs. 862 crore and Port would carry out works under their scope of Rs.366.39 crore.

The Project would enable the port to handle large size container vessels, which will save precious foreign exchange besides facilitating the Mumbai Port to bridge the capacity gap in Mumbai Region along with JNPT.

It will also facilitate augmented growth in trade, employment generation and increasing income, incremental regional economic development in addition to other spin-off economic benefits.

The project is also meant to provide a cost effective and efficient gateway for imports and exports for industries in the Special Economic Zone, the opening of retail sector etc
