Mumbai
27th July, 2013
Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) had the honour of hosting Mr.Rohit Khatri, Director, Global Subsidiaries Group, Citi, for a guest lecture. An alumnus of JBIMS from the batch of 2002, Mr. Khatri was ecstatic to return to his alma mater. In his current position since 2009, Mr. Khatri intended to address the fresh MMS batch on the various aspects of the banking industry as well as career prospects in the financial sector and the students were greatly looking forward to the session.
Mr. Khatri started the lecture by giving a brief description of the banking industry and the various roles and responsibilities in each segment. He started with the coverage group. This is basically the front end of the bank and includes people like relationship managers (RM). RMs are responsible for sales, understanding the needs of a particular client and also ensuring the legality of the transactions with respect to the rules and regulations of the bank as well as the governing authority. He cited examples of Citibank which had a large share of its business in SMEs and MMEs.
The second segment addressed by Mr.Khatri was that of Institutional Corporate Groups. This deals with transaction banking which consists of custody, trade and cash management. This segment, according to Mr. Khatri, is not affected by the state of the economy thereby stressing the continuity of good jobs in the profile. Also, this part of banks deal with foreign exchange, swaps and derivative options. He followed this by enumerating the basic skills of a trader in a bank and the importance of traders in financial institutions in general.
The final segment was that of Capital markets and Investment banking. Capital markets include debt and equity subdivisions. Mr. Khatri emphasised the dependence of this segment on the state of the economy and went on to describe some instances which occurred during the recession period. Investment banking was aptly explained with the help of examples of recent mergers and acquisitions like Diageo – United Spirits and Citibank – Bank of America.
Following this crisp description of the entire banking industry, the floor was laid open for questions from the batch. The students asked Mr. Khatri a plethora of probing questions which were explained in great detail by him. These ranged from the work culture in various banks, the Basel 3 norms, and the Indian retail banking sector to the finer nuances of the financial inclusion policies of Government of India. The students were thrilled to have such a distinguished personality address them and also about the opportunity to interact with him. The session was truly enriching yet deeply engaging with the students left asking for more. JBIMS looks forward to hosting on campus similar leaders from the industry who continue to inspire students from the tremendous work their doing in their respective fields.
