MOTIVATING PEOPLE
Effective leaders engage with their workforce to build commitment. In a business environment, this motivates employees to improve the volume and quality of their output. Good leaders motivate
their staff using a variety of skills, learned through training and experience.
We interviewed three people from varied job definitions and asked them the same set of questions. All of them were happy with their present job but interviewees 2 and 3 were dissatisfied with their net salary. Although 1 and 3 disclosed their salaries, 2 did not disclose his. It is evident that 2 earns a salary which is much less than what he expects and is the only one who cannot save money at the end of the month. 1 felt of leaving the job but adjusted subsequently. Given a chance 2 will love to leave and 3 has tried to but failed. 1 and 3 feels free to talk to their bosses about the problem and 2 is apprehensive about doing so because he is relatively new in his profession. All three get some spare time to go out with their families. Their bosses are cooperative enough to grant them leaves in emergency situation. 3 has never faced a dispute with his company’s client and for 1 and 2 their bosses have taken the side of the nonguilty person. For 2 the working conditions are decent but 1 and 3 feels improvement is required. Provision for latest tools and gadgets at work are motivating to all since work pressure would be reduced. 1 and 3 are not worried so much about what others are earning, they strive to increase their salary by their own hard –work. 2 feels that regionalism is affecting his personal growth. None of them wants his wards to take over the same profession.1 has high aspirations of starting his own business in the future. For 1, Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory can be used to motivate him. He wants to start his own business and therefore rise to the second level of the pyramid (safety). His employer can motivate him by providing better wages and incentives because he is ambitious and will work hard to achieve his goals. For 2, Adams' theory can be used to motivate him. It states that employees strive for equity between themselves and other workers. Equity is achieved when the ratio of employee outcomes over inputs is equal to other employee outcomes over inputs. His employer can impress upon the fact that if he works harder he will be at par with his peers very soon. For 3, ERG theory can be used to motivate him. Employees seek to fulfill needs of existence,
relatedness and growth. 3 tried to shift to a new job probably because he did not find himself related to his firm. His employee can make him believe that he is an integral part of the company and that his growth will be in unison with that of the company.
