2011 Purpose Prize Awards Ceremony
Sausalito, California
The Purpose Prize was created in 2005 by Civic Ventures
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Purpose Prize winner Randal Charlton.
[Charlton]: “I’ve had the privilege to play a very small part in a growing effort to
drive Detroit in a new direction.”
Title: Randal won the Purpose Prize
for his successful efforts supporting
entrepreneurs and creating jobs
MARC FREEDMAN:
The Purpose Prize is an investment in what somebody 60 years old or 70 year
old, years old is gonna do next, drawing on their experience to do creative,
innovative things
[Charlton] “I’m really honored by this award”
RANDAL CHARLTON: I take it as an award not just for me but for the team at
Tech Town which is a business incubator in Detroit.
Title: Under Randal’s leadership,
TechTown trained over 2,200
entrepreneurs and helped raise $14
million for new ventures
RANDAL CHARLTON:
While I’ve been running Tech Town I’ve seen an incredible need. I spent life as
an entrepreneur. Made a lot of mistakes along the way and I felt this was an
opportunity to use my background and experience and give something back to
the community.
LAURIE BOURNIAS:
Randal has made me look at retirement from a different perspective.
[Charlton]: We’re creating one new company, one new job at a time
LAURIE BOURNIAS:
He’s a visionary but he also puts his plan into action. He has so much passion
and it rubs off on me and I want to help in every way that I can.
RANDAL CHARLTON:
Laurie has been an important part of our family team. I first got to know her way
back in 2000 and I said, look I do not want to take risks with my personal life so if
the business goes wrong I don’t destroy my personal situation as well as my
business.
LAURIE BOURNIAS:
The best thing that Randal did was communicate his vision to me and we were
able to put together a strategy for his own personal assets.
RANDAL CHARLTON:
I recently decided to step down from Tech Town. I hadn’t decided what my next
adventure was going to be until it was, I guess, decided for me with this Purpose
Prize
[Charlton]: We’re going to show the world that not all entrepreneurs are kids in
college dorms eating Raman noodles,
RANDAL CHARLTON:
Winners of the Purpose Prize, including myself are free to apply it in any way we
see fit.
[Charlton]: thank you very much
RANDAL CHARLTON:
I plan to use it to help launch this new initiative, Boom/The New Economy which
will work with people in their late 50’s and 60’s who are thinking of setting up
either social venture, or a for profit entrepreneurship.
LOURIE BOURNIAS:
I’m honored to be involved with a client such as Randal. He’s certainly committed
to his new business venture and therefore I’m committed right there with him.
