MBA hype and reality

Is in these times the pure academic focus of B schools justified esp when fee are being raised by top b schools without an eye on the salaries such a grim scenario would offer to students?

The way I see it, this is the best time for anyone to pursue an MBA degree .. 2 years down the line, the economic conditions will be very different than what they are now and students graduating then will be able to take full advantage of it.

An MBA degree is in vogue during recession and MBA institutes are capitalizing on it.

At Presently There is a lack of Job Oppurtunities But @ the time u complete u r MBA IN 2 Years u can have Good demand ....but try to do from Good Institutes...

MBA is not just about good placements. MBA changes you as a person. Other thing is that if you are doing MBA from a good institute you will certainly get a job. May be this time is hard to get placement but those who will get placed now will grow easily because now the growth is stopped but when market situation will improve growth of industry will rise significantly and so will the growth of its human resources.

^^ True, but did you look at the iim-l (or was it i)'s summer internship scenario this year? some students are still unplaced according to a news paper

I second chirag and felicity on this issue. MBA is once in a life opportunity and if you can have it from a Top-notch institute then your life is made. Economic upturns and downturns are both fleeting. What stays with you is the perspective that you develop as an MBA

I would say both...
Reality because it really teaches you tool/techniques and rules for corporate world... with theories and case studies...
Hype because all that can be learn with experience also but industry won't identify unless you are 'MBA'
what say guys?

But in such a grim scenario, are mba students really getting into the right job they want? or is it that they are taking up any job because of the market conditions??

The job market situation is really getting grim. People are not getting jobs and those already with a job are having to face pay cuts and pink slips. Best time to be in a B school.

Doing an MBa now and finishhing in 2 years is a great idea.......Knowledge gained is never knowledge wasted......i come acorss a lot of Pessimist who r against MBa saying "its jst a Hyped up degree and today ppl wid MBa's from good university are jobless"...But what these people lack is a Long term Vision.....If the Economic condition is bad and has gone down....it wont be long when the downturn will again start coming up.....Good Luck!!!!

BottomLine:- MBA definitely Rocks..

Hey itz really has become a thruth that nowadays Bschools are not considering the curriculum rather are going on hiking the fees. MBA has become a cup of the rich. The ROI on the investments iz as low as .2% or even less. Thus Bschoolz must shift their focus from revenues to resources :-)

hey ya idont thinm MBA is a hype ,everybody want to get some edge by something extra which MBA is able to provide in such short period of time.

tnx

Guys

I guess i dint articulate my thought correctly. What i wanted to say was that when b schools say that they are only academic institutions they forget the fact that the fees that these institutions(esp recent increases) have started to charge in no way justify their "Academic" focus and hence fee charged should be more reflective of the jobs that majority of the batch is going to get and not just what a chosen few would get.

For eg - A fee of 12 lakhs for two years and a salary of 12 lakhs once you get out of campus. Is it justified? especially when the government is ready to finance all that the institute wants and only for the flimsy excuse of being independent the institute refuses to accept that?

Hello folks,

Well MBA for me is a first step in the corporate world. It really doesnt matter which institute u represent,The 'name' of institute will matter a bit in your first JOB, after which its purely your attitude that takes you further.

People always relate MBA is 'moolah' . Its definitely 'a silly' way to see the big picture.MBA is all about getting familiar with the corporate world , deeper understanding in the preferred sector , and getting the fundamentals right .

Education should never be weighed with the package you take back home, but with the knowledge you have gained after two years.

An MBA degree at this point of time might not give the expected placement or rise in positin / salary, but it does helps u develop as a person, improves the way u approach the different corporate situations in a professional way.

hello folks,

i feel that MBA adds new perspective for looking at things and we are better equipped to make efficient judgements.

thnks
