MBA fallacy!

MBA Degree!!

The words that adorn the “Qualification” category of every recruitment article.

MBA required. But why?

A question that will find very few brave men to answer. But the debate continues, why has MBA transcended every other Educational Qualification and become an essential element for success in the corporate world?

An MBA degree gives a holistic training related to every aspect in which an employee may be engaged in. Organizational Behavior, Public Relations, Corporate Ethics, Environmental Concerns, International Business, even World Culture, MBA provides bits and pieces of each segment, yet our B-Schools miss out on the fact that education is more than recalling what you have learnt and putting it on paper.

There is intense competition to get to the best B-Schools, to crack the toughest exam on the planet (yeah, CAT was voted as the toughest exam) to secure a seat in one of the IIM’s, but yet we miss out on what is that we look forward to when we join these colleges. “Everyone’s running and so should we”, this seems to be the war-cry!

Education is about understanding what has been taught and putting it to use. But a student with just book training will be as unaware about management studies as a boy will know the taste of the ice-cream he sees on TV.

So what is the use of having a prized MBA degree when all that you know is little remains of your boring chapters and the rote-learned industry applications that you haven’t ever practiced or applied!

There is an urgent need to bring in more practical knowledge with more industry training into our curriculum! We should not aim at producing more graduates, but on producing more quality graduates!!

The courses should focus on learning the new and upcoming technologies rather than spending time on the old and outdated practices, with more focus on learning to implement them in day-to-day corporate affairs!

At the end, it is not about holding on to a degree that should count, but the knowledge that he/her brings with it that should be counted!
