The Sensex, which rose to 20,332 in early trades, but gave up gains soon thereafter, plunged to 19,923.96 during the final hour, after moving in a tight band around the unchanged line for a long time. The barometer finally ended the day at 19,983.13, recording a loss of 185.76 points or 0.92%. The Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange settled at 6027.30, off the day's low of 6008.15. It had surged to 6127.05 in opening trades.
Information technology stocks were the most prominent losers. Mirroring the decline of key stocks in that space, the BSE IT index ended lower by 2.22% today. Realty, metal, power, capital goods and bank stocks saw some buying earlier in the session, but drifted lower in late afternoon trade.
Oil, PSU and consumer durables stocks too ended well off their highs. Select healthcare and automobile stocks managed to sign off on a winning note. Midcap and smallcap stocks had a good time in positive territory but wilted under pressure and settle lower in the end
