New Delhi – Keeping in view the growing importance of human resource personnel in overall growth of a company, IMT Ghaziabad in its annual fest ‘Passion’ consciously chose a case study whereby teams representing premier business schools were given the task to provide solutions to some of the burning topics, the industry is currently facing.
At a time when organizations are going global and with increased merger and acquisition activities, the role of human resource personnel has once become a key area. HR manager helps company maintain work-friendly environment and retain the best talent indirectly contributing to company’s bottom line.
The event ‘maHRath’ (the HR event of Passion) threw real problems before the management students representing various B schools across the country to analyze their capabilities as HR managers to solve problems. The event was designed in such a way to test students’ abilities to create a highly productive work force in an organization.
Mehak, from K J Somaiya Institute of Management and Research at Mumbai, came here to represent her institute at maHRath said, “The case study that we were supposed to analyze and present our views was contemporary. As we attempted to solve the HR issue that Maruti is currently facing, we got a sense that how relevant is the theory that is taught in the classroom to solve real life problems.” Mehak had Sushma and Shivi as team members.
Explaining the benefit of such activities, Sushma said that the jury was very competent and the students gained lot of additional information that one miss in a typical classroom environment. Different perspective on issues such as only 3 per cent of the Chief Executive Officers in Indian companies have an HR background and why HR personnel are neglected for CEO jobs helped us fine tune our analysis, she said.
maHRath, which saw students from institutes including Delhi School of Economics, IMD Gurgaon, IMT Ghaziabad, was aimed at exploring the inherent and intrinsic abilities of an HR manager. It floated a real-life case study to all the participants. The respondents were judged on the basis of their approach, feasibility and originality of the solution.
The case studies thrown at students ranged from strike at Maruti’s production unit, policy to provide equal admission opportunity to students from various universities in country’s top educational institutes, and HR issues in retail chains. Though student felt that they had tight deadlines and limited experience to deal with such issues, nevertheless it was a great preparation to face the challenges in the real world.
Human resource management is the organizational function that deals with recruiting, managing, developing and motivating people. It also aims at providing functional and specialized support and systems for employee engagement and managing systems to foster regulatory compliance with human right standards. “But often the very personnel working towards improving the work environment of a company, do not get due recognition in the company,” an MDI Gurgaon student opined.
