New Delhi: Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday informed Parliament that the coronavirus-induced lockdown in the country prevented approximately 14 lakh to 29 lakh cases and 37,000 to 78,000 deaths.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on day two of the Monsoon Session, the health minister said the four months during which India remained under lockdown helped in creating additional health infrastructure, in enhancing human resource and producing within the county critical elements such as PPE kits, N95 masks and ventilators.

The minister noted that India has been able to manage the COVID-19 pandemic well, adding that coronavirus fatality and recovery rates stand at 1.67% and 77.65%, respectively.

"India has been able to limit its cases and death per million to 3,320 cases per million and 55 deaths per million, which are one of the lowest in the world," Harsh Vardhan said.
