The word leadership can refer to:

Those entities that perform one or more acts of leading. The ability to affect human behaviour so as to accomplish a mission. Influencing a group of people to move towards its goal setting or goal achievement. OR in simple words

A leader is simply someone who has followers.

GOOD or BAD
Who exactly is a GOOD leader and who is BAD? Is Bad leadership an Oxymoron ? Does Goodness or Badness of the mission of the leader define whether Leader is good or bad? Or whether the inability to achieve mission is the sign of bad leadership ? Is Osama a good leader as he has followers ? Endless questions ?

What is BAD Leadership?
Most people and books automatically assume that leadership is somehow synonymous with goodness and virtue.There hardly has been any effort in dwelling on the nuances of bad leadership and incompetence One such effort is BAD Leadership by Barbara Kellerman. In the book Kellerman describes the seven “types” of bad leadership and describes them as follows:
1. INCOMPETENT: Where the leader and at least some followers lack the will or skill to sustain effective action. 2. RIGID: Where the leader and at least some of his followers are stiff, unyielding, and unwilling to adapt to new ideas, new information or changing times. 3. INTEMPERATE: Where the leader lacks self-control and is aided and abetted by followers who do not intervene. 4. CALLOUS: Where the leader and at least some of the followers are uncaring or unkind; he ignores or discounts the needs of the rest of the organization. 5. CORRUPT: Where the leader and some of his followers lie, cheat, or steal They put self-interest above all else. 6. INSULAR: Where the leader and at least some of the followers disregard or at least minimize the health and welfare of those outside the small centre group. 7. EVIL: Where the leader and at least some followers commit atrocities. The atrocities committed by them may be physical or psychological.

Jill Barad, Ex-CEO, Mattel Inc.
• Joined Mattel in 1981 and within

couple of years, named one of the two product managers of Barbie Team

• By late 1980's she was credited

with nearly single-handedly transforming Barbie from dated doll to prized collectible.

How she climbed up and…
? In 1989, Barad decided to capitalise on her

success. She threatened CEO John Ammerman of leaving the company if not promoted. The gamble paid-off. She got the co-presidency of the firm.
? Three years later, she buzzed in to

Ammerman yet again, this time for assurance to succeed him. Surprisingly she had her way through and in January 1997 she was appointed CEO. This was the turning point of excellence era of Barad.

The Wrong Decision!!
? In May 1999, at the time when Dot Com

was at its peak, she decided to merge with The Learning Company, a major in making educational software. It was $3.6 bn deal, 10 times the gross sales of Mattel. ? In 1997, Learning Company had accumulated losses $475 mn ? Deal was perceived as “Fish eating a sick Whale” ? To digest the merger, Mattel had to shed many other assets, lay off 3000 men -10% of the workforce.

Reasons for the downfall as they say • Incompetency – Lack of Judgment, which resulted in wrong decision • Poor Interpersonal Skills - Lack of good friends and reliable allies • Lack of self-control - Temperamental and controlling, especially with

male subordinates. She was also known to have had run-ins with colleagues, who eventually had to quit.
