Leadership Style at Ace Hardware : Ace Hardware Corporation is a hardware cooperative based in Oak Brook, Illinois, United States. Ace Hardware was founded in 1924 by Richard Hesse, E. Gunnard Lindquist, Frank Burke, and Oscar Fisher in Chicago, Illinois

Luckily, Ace has John Madden up its sleeve. Despite the growth of warehouse-style competitors, Ace Hardware has remained a household name, thanks to ads featuring Madden, a former Oakland Raiders football coach and TV commentator. By sales the company is the #1 hardware cooperative in the US, ahead of Do It Best. From about 15 warehouses Ace distributes such products as electrical and plumbing supplies, garden equipment, hand tools, housewares, and power tools. Ace's paint division is a major paint manufacturer in the US.
Why This Company Makes Our AllStar List
A tough retail market has contributed to Ace Hardware’s drop in our overall ranking. While the company’s growth rank is a very low #290, Ace still boasts good financial strength (#110). The company is a retailer-owned cooperative: Franchisees are members of the cooperative, and the company is wholly owned by franchisees.

Franchisees benefit from Ace’s national name brand and its many years in business and franchising. The company distinguishes itself from big-box home improvement stores with personal service and involvement in local communities; Hispanic customers, in particular, have become a key target market. In 2010, The J.D. Power and Associates Home Improvement Retail Store Satisfaction Study ranked Ace Hardware “Highest in Customer Satisfaction among Major Home Improvement Retail Stores” for the fourth consecutive year.

What began as a small chain of stores established by a group of Chicago-area retailers in 1924 has evolved into one of the nation's leading "helpful hardware" dealer-owned cooperatives.

2004 marked a milestone year for Ace Hardware - their 80th anniversary. Throughout the years, many things have changed. From a few Chicago-area hardware stores, ACE has grown to include more than 4,800 stores in 50 states and 72 countries. Yet one thing has remained unchanged - ACE's commitment to deliver quality, friendly and helpful hardware service to consumers.

LeadFirst has worked strategically with ACE for the past nine years to develop a progressive, leadership culture. ACE has employed LeadFirst's Round 3, Achieving A Performance-Driven Culture process to first map its current state culture and then, using LeadFirst's Round 1 and Round 2 leader development programs, deliberately migrating that culture to higher performance.

To date, 482 ACE managers have experienced LeadFirst's leader development process.

Following is a sampling of participant feedback:

"LeadFirst is an exciting program conducted by a knowledgeable and perceptive professional staff. It is one of the most useful and relevant approaches because the content is focused to one's needs and understanding. Many of the concepts can be identified with well-known leaders as well as with work colleagues, thereby making it immediately applicable."
