Kalam calls for building special capacities in education

President A P J Abdul Kalam today called for building special capacities through the education system to enable student growth and contribute towards economic development. :clap2:

Delivering the 14th convocation address at the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University here, he said research, creativity, technology, entrepreneurial and moral leadership were the five capacities required to be built through education.

These capacities would enable students to meet the challenges in the mission of transforming India into a developed country by 2020, he said.

The most important part of education was to imbibe students with the confidence that "we can do it", he said.

"If we develop in students the five capacities, we will produce a self-directed, self-controlled and life-long learners," the President said, adding that these were the students who would work as a "self-organising networks" and transform the nation into a prosperous one.

Stressing the importance of research, he said good research could lead to quality teaching which in turn would result in high level research.

Tamil Nadu Governor and Chancellor of the university Surjit Singh Barnala presided over the function. Vice-Chancellor Cynthia Pandian welcomed the gathering.

Earlier, the President distributed light-weight callipers, sponsored by the local Lions Club, to a few physically challenged children.
