JBIMS students attempt to bring reforms at STRATEGYM ‘10
“Providing a whole new approach to the age old problem faced by the industry and bring about a paradigm shift in the way various business situations are perceived in a fast changing business arena.” This ideology was at display when research papers were presented at Strategym ’10, the Annual Business Convention of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies organised at The Intercontinental – The Lalit, Mumbai.
The event was inaugurated by Mr. Sajjan Jindal, Vice Chairman and MD, JSW Steel. The theme of Strategym’10 was ‘Redefining India’ which was emphasized in the papers that were presented. A total of 8 research papers of varied topics and fields that tackle social and environmental issues were presented in front of experts and high profile panellists from the relevant and corresponding fields. Various aspects were minutely taken into consideration and feasible solutions were presented to each of the problems through these research papers.
The panelists gave their recommendations and suggestions for the paper and guided the students to develop their proposals. Most papers that were presented were of social relevance. The paper on ‘Leveraging on Mobile Technology for improving healthcare in India’ suggested a scalable and viable health system to improve the standards of health & nutrition in suburban and rural India by means of the efficient use of the mobile technology. The growing challenges in infrastructure financing prompted the students to come up with a roadmap to better the infrastructure financing practices in India in the paper ‘Infrastructure Financing’. Through the research paper ‘Modernization of Railway Stations in Mumbai’ the students aimed to come up with a model to modernize Mumbai’s railway stations. The project aimed to be executed with private sector partnership so that superior services were provided to railway passengers at the stations by converting the latter into urban icons and standard bearers of the city. The research paper on ‘Restructuring Banking in Rural India for Inclusive Growth’ aimed to develop a model to enhance the banking services in rural India by identifying the current limitations and key improvement areas. This paper was taken up by Bank of India for implementation even before it was presented. Due to growing negligence there is a threat to wildlife and it would require special attention to save India from losing its green heritage.
The paper ‘Saving Wildlife – The way ahead!’ suggests a framework for protecting the threatened wildlife, and encouraging wise use of natural resources.It also evaluates the commercial viability of the proposed project from the perspective of the Private player and the Government.
The 3rd prize winner at Strategym ’10 was the paper on ‘Technology – A key to streamlining Road Transport in India’. This paper aimed at developing a model to revamp the transportation system in India using technology.
The paper on ‘Reviving the flavour of Mumbai – Aarey Dairy’, which was awarded the 2nd prize at Strategym’10, analysed the problems in the current business model of Aarey and came up with strategic solutions to them. The officials from Aarey Dairy are keen on implementing the suggestions presented by the students and have offered an off-summer project to the team.
The winning paper at Strategym this year, ‘Revamping the Sanitation Facilities and Drainage System in Mumbai ’, analysed various major issues affecting the drainage and sanitation facilities in the city and suggested a comprehensive framework to upgrade the existing drainage system and improve the sanitation facilities in Mumbai. It was appreciated by the panelists and UNICEF has invited the paper for further deliberation and implementation.
The panelists and experts congratulated the students of JBIMS for taking up topics of such social relevance and that the quality of research that was carried out for each paper surpassed their expectations and did full justice to the legacy of the institute. In the past, research papers presented at Strategym have been bought by companies like UTV and LIC. Also last year, the research paper on ‘Revamping the Postal Service in India’ had been taken up by the Delhi Government for review and implementation.
Strategym successfully concluded its 15th year since its inception in 1996 with an attempt to positively affect the society and a promise to be back with more of such initiatives and bigger responsibilities next year.
