Many scientists link emotions with outward behavior whereas I prefer to link
emotions with feelings and thought processes. I’m uncomfortable with the
emotions – behavior link because it infers a kind of causal relationship,
happening at an unconscious level. The focus is on what people do rather than
how they feel. Under this umbrella, Sam’s teacher, Jo says, “Sam gets violent
when he’s angry.”
Subsequently Jo and Sam have to work on preventing Sam from getting angry.
We call this anger management and one has to actually get angry to see how
well it is working. Under the emotions – feelings – thought link, the way Sam
thinks about what happens to him can lead to feelings of anger, which can
escalate into violent behavior or any number of other behaviors. The focus is
now on what people think and feel rather than what they do.
